We have a locally owned Oldies Radio Station in Memphis, bought by a Dr. So we can hear the Music of the 1940's thru the 1970's. All the oldie stations here have changed to Country or Rock. The website is www.sunny1210.com. You can listen on the computer too. It is fun, people call in with memories of places growing up in Memphis, so I called him about going to Sears as a little girl because we use to have one of the biggest Sears Stores in America. It came up that I have several Vintage Sears Wish Books so he ask me to email Pictures for the website. He is out of town right now, but emailed me to say they will get them on the website soon. I posted Some pictures of mostly Toys here on the forum last Year, but thought I would share some new ones here while I was emailing to Sunny 1210. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

Ah, the Sears Catalog, how that brings back memories. For the first ten years of my life mother ordered our school shoes from the catalogs along with all our clothes. When I was eleven we moved and we could catch the bus into town.
But, you know I still like getting things in the mail. Yesterday I ordered a salad spinner from QVC so the internet has become my Sears Catalog.
Thanks Connie, for reminding me how I used to pour through those catalogs and circle what I wanted. I never got it all but I just like doing it. I still circle what I want to order in seed catalogs than I come to my senses and order what I can afford on line.

Oh Connie! That was the year I got my beloved Miss Peep. I still have her. She is quite spoiled, and has on an original Pamper (newborn of course, with pink pins) Hubs and I have no children, and silly me, I am so worried about what will happen to her when I pass. I only have nephews. I remember the back end of the catalog was always dogeared and worn out (the toy section of course!)

I loved the memories last year and it hasn't changed for this year! I love all of the pictures and memories, warms my heart. CJ- my middle daughter just told me that her boyfriends little boy circled all the "boy" toys in the flyer for Toyland at Farm and Fleet and put X's thru all of the "girl" things. That brought back many memories for me, since, I have two brothers!! So, GREAT to share the memories!! Thank you Connie!!

Wow, Connie! What a wonderful walk down Memory Lane! When I was a very little girl, I planned out my whole future from the pages of the Sears catalog, from the curtains I'd put on my windows, to the silverware that would grace my china, to the suits and coats my husband would wear, right down to the clothing and toys we'd provide for our children! I'd even draw little pictures of all the outfits I liked, hoping one day I might wear just one of them to school! Such a silly little girl! LOL! To me, the catalog was simply a magical place for dreaming. I well remember the excitement in our household when the Christmas Wish Book would arrive. My sister, brother and I would marvel over all the wonderful things on each page - for hours! I swear my siblings really believed if they saw it first, it was THEIRS! LOL! Oh, my... so long ago.. and yet, it seems just like yesterday! :) Thanks for the memories, sister! Hugs - Nini

I feel the same way as all of you, just makes my heart Happy to remember! Nini, I did the same thing! LOL!! I still have a set of dishes from the Sears catalog that I bought in 1978! I was cleaning the kitchen cabinets last week and just the sight of them made tears well up in my eyes, they were the first set of nice dishes that we got after we married in 1973 and Oh, the memories that came flooding back ! looking at the little blue flowers on the plates.
This is the tree we had in 1965! Our family always laughs at this picture, because my Paw-paw closed off the dining room with a new wall for my Granny, and he did not get the wall painted before Christmas!
I have more picture to post later, I am headed to the kitchen to bake cornbread for my dressing for Thanskgiving!

Oh Connie, What a trip down memory lane. I lived and still live in a small river town and only went to Montgomery two times a year back in the day. At Christmas and Easter!! It was only 40 miles away but it seemed like it took all day to get there!! We always received the Sears Roebuck catalog sometime after the fourth of July, can't remember just when, but besides the Bible, it was the most read book in our house!! Wish I had saved some. My kids would take turns looking and circling what they wanted. What sweet memories. I've been nostalgic lately...Smiles, and thanks again for the photos...Smiles, Beth

The Sears Wishbook was probably the most read book in our house when I was young. My dad worked for Sears so he got a discount on everything purchased through Sears...all my clothes and most of my toys came from Sears. That picture of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang brings back memories--my brother had that model (probably still does). It was made by the Corgi Car company. We also had Montgomery Ward (I have a blow dryer I used in college that still works--it came from M.W.) The Sears store downtown used to get lots of business. then a mall opened across the river and downtown kind of faded away. Now that mall has closed down. Brings back memories. It seemed like those Christmas catalogs had everything imaginable. Now there's so much to choose from it's mind-boggling. I liked it better in the old days. Cindy

I loved your memories Beth and Prariehawk! it was one of the most read in our house too! They made things to last back then! Here is a few more pics! We had a tall Sears tower In Mid-Town Memphis and they are making an office building out of it now,It has been closed since the early 1980's, but such a landmark, people wanted to save it. We have a oldies radio station here and people call in to talk about their trips to Sears Crosstown. It looked like Macy's in the movies. For us it was an adventure because they had escalators and a candy ship and fresh popcorn every day. At Christmas it was a magical place to go!

I love the Sears Christmas Catalog pictures! When my son was little I told him to circle the things he DIDN'T want - that was a lot easier. LOL!

You know what I remember most about visiting the Sears store at the holidays when I was a kid? The smell of buttery popcorn! Do you girls remember that? I also remember all the colored lights, the carols loudly playing throughout the store, and the sound of bells... There was always the sound of bells! What do YOU all remember? Hugs - Nini

Thanks Grace! Nini, I sooooooo remember the smell of Popcorn and the belltones were pagers, back then 1 bell was the manager, then 2 may be a Dept. Manager, Etc. one of the catalogs I have, the lady I got it from, her Aunt worked at Sears in Chicago and she told me about the bell System. Her Aunt worked there 30 years and the catalog was part of her estate Auction.

Wow, my early childhood just flashed before my eyes! I loved going through the Sears catalog's toy section every Christmas. The white Christmas tree looks just like the one my late grandparents used to have. I remember being speechless the first time I saw it. I had no idea there were all white evergreens! Then I learned about artificial trees & how they came in all kinds of interesting colors.
Thanks for sharing! Dawn in IL |
