I have recently joined the Sisterhood and look forward to communicating with like-minded women. I grew up on a 500-acre farm here in sunny Queensland; did lots of traveling; met my American husband and lived in WA state for 6 years (this is where I discovered Maryjane); and we have recently purchased our own piece of paradise back in Australia. We are busy renovating our old house, establishing organic gardens, putting together a chook (chicken) tractor, and getting to know our farmer neighbours. I looking forward to chatting with you!

Hello Cindy, welcome to the farm. I have always been interested in your country. Always thought of it as being like my state of Texas. Big, wide opened, and inhabited by friendly independent people.

Got to ask what is a chicken tractor?

Welcome Cindy! You are in the right place, many of us share your very interests. Your place in Australia sounds beautiful and I look forward to hearing about it and perhaps seeing a picture or two as well.

Got to ask too, what is a chicken tractor?

Glad you asked - A chook tractor is basically a mobile chicken coop. I first heard of the idea when I went to a presentation by Joel Salatin. If you haven't read his book "The Sheer Ecstasy of Being a Lunatic Farmer", it is well worth the read. He refers to the "chickenness of the chicken" - the ability to scratch, exercise, breathe fresh air, eat a diversified diet that includes bugs and grass, to be housed on a new ground routinely... Our chickens are spoilt - when they are not free-ranging, their house is being moved all around our paddock - but they return the favour with plenty of delicious organic eggs.

Hi Mary beth - we lived in Olympia, WA, between 2006-2012. We spent a lot of time in Eastern WA aswell because my husband's family are spread out between Pasco and Latah. I learned to ski on White Pass. Olympia was a beautiful place, but a little too much rain for my liking. I'm glad to be back, living in Queensland - "the Sunshine State".

Welcome Cindy
I have been to your beautiful country but never to Queensland, I was in Melbourne and Sydney. My dearest friend is from Melbourne actually but she resides in the states now. Love the word Chook, she uses that all the time. Hope to hear from you!

Hi Cindy!
We keep hens in a tractor too and it's so convenient. We have a small house on an acre of property that does not yet have a fence. Having our birds in a tractor keeps them safe from predators (we have an abundance of hawks, raccoons and opossum) and they have the benefit of fresh grass. I would love to see pics of the one you made. Ours was bought pre-made, we went with an Eglu for ease of cleaning since my husband and I both work full time, at least until we can start subsidizing our income on what we homestead. That's our dream anyway. Great to meet you and look forward to sharing adventures with you!
Cheers!
