We have had this camper on our property for many, many years. When our kids were little (they are now adults) we had it on the back of our Chevy truck and used it for all kinds of outings. It was parked in our yard long ago, became storage and has become very, VERY dilapidated and not fit for any camping . . . or human use. Too many mud dauber nests, hornet nests and evidence of mice.
So, I started cleaning out everything that was in it, finding long lost "treasures", but mostly lots of stuff needing to be trashed.
We decided that, since we have a local salvage yard that buys aluminum, tin, steel and iron, we'd rather recycle the skin (aluminum) than just smash the thing all to bits in a sad heap. We plan to dispose of the remains in a suitable manner.
So for the past two days I (all by myself) "skinned" the camper. Using my hubby's cordless Makita construction screwdriver I unscrewed hundreds of screws from the trim and windows. Then, using a crowbar, claw hammer and pliers I pulled all the pieces off . . . there were more nails securing it to the frame than there were screws. Three of the windows were broken.
There were some sections of the skin that are silver colored textured aluminum and just the right size to cut and make into little, lightweight window boxes for our little glamper trailer the "Reiver's Rest". Those pieces will cut and bend very nicely . . . and I can paint them as well. YAY!!![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif) And, yes, it was a lot of work and elbow grease!!![](icons/icon_smile_tongue.gif)

The skin, all folded up, ready for hauling to the salvage yard. All the trim pieces are in another pile with some other things to go. I found all kinds of other metal objects of every description around the perimeter of the camper that were covered with rust, dirt, sagebrush, rabbit brush, etc.

Impressive CJ. Very. Don't you think skinning a camper should be a merit badge:)?

Thank you girls! Yup, Sara, it does sound like a C&W song . .![](icons/icon_smile_big.gif)
It WAS work, but mostly because of all the rust around the screws and nails, making them harder to get out. I'm going to go pull off the pieces of insulation and bag them for the trash. It was terribly windy yesterday and I was afraid they'd get lifted and blown off, but they didn't. I don't like being out in awful wind and I certainly didn't want to deal with the fibers, dust and crud from the insulation in the wind.
My hubby doesn't remember the make of the camper but it had have been built in the 60's, perhaps very early 70's. I don't even remember how we obtained it . . . hmmmmmm.![](icons/icon_smile_tongue.gif)
I'll be glad to finish this project as it's been a lot of work for this senior citizen!

The insulation is bagged for trash pickup. The framing and paneling has been torn apart, 2x2's will be firewood for my hubby's shop this winter. The rest is piled into a pile for burning later this week (yes, we are able to do that in this area safely). I'm glad it's down and the worst of it is over. Dirty and ugly! We're planning on our salvage yard run tomorrow or Wednesday and be done with that haul for now. Whew!!!!! CJ

Salvage haul made! Came home with a little cash . . . 12 cents/lb. for the aluminum. Not a lot for all the work, but more than we had and certainly better than bashing it all to smithereens and not doing something useful with it.
There was a trailer load of steel and iron too which doesn't pay as much per pound, but it was good to haul some stuff away. Probably will be spring before any more hauls! And there is certainly more to haul . . good gravy! CJ
