Now that it is officially October :) I thought I would share this wonderful pie recipe :)

Cape Cod October Pie


1 1/2 cups coarsely chopped cranberries
1 cup peeled, cored, diced Granny Smith Apples
1/2-cup raisins
1/2-cup walnuts
1/4 cup cranberry (or cranberry/apple) juice
1-teaspoon cinnamon
1 1/2 cups sugar
1-teaspoon vanilla extract
2 teaspoons flour
4 Tablespoons butter

Line a 9-inch pie plate with pastry rolled to 1/3-inch thickness. Toss together: cranberries, apples, raisins, walnuts and juice with the sugar, flour, cinnamon, and vanilla. Spoon lightly into unbaked pie shell and dot with butter. Cut strips from remaining piecrust and make a lattice over top of pie. Bake in a preheated 425-degree oven for about 40 minutes, until fruits are tender and pastry is brown.

OH! Where did you visit on the Cape, Teri? I can't remember if we talked about this before or not, but I lived several years in Bass River and South Yarmouth while growing up!!! Such a wonderful place... SUCH wonderful memories!!! You can take the girl out of the beach, but you can NEVER take the beach out of the girl!!! ;) Hugs - Nini

Nini,
I lived in MA for almost 3/4 of my life, so we have been from end to end.
Of course Ptown,Hyannis, Bourne, we used to stay at a camp site right under the Bourne bridge.
awwww, Nini, the thing I miss most about New England is the ocean, even as COLD as it was ... still so beautiful. This time of year we would just take Rte1 and drive all the way Kennebunkport ME. miss that.I am a Yankee for sure!

We were just up there for two weeks in September, Teri... We drove all over the place in Maine, Massachusetts and Rhode Island, taking our son on a historical tour for homeschool. We hadn't realized just how long it had been, but we hadn't been since our son was an infant. He didn't even know what the ocean smelled like! Eghads! I have not done my job! Things have changed so much... SO much... and yet, so much is still the same and it's still home. :) The ocean was BEAUTIFUL!!! We went to Gooseberry Beach in Newport and oh my was it a sight to behold! Makes me a little teary just thinking about it! :) All is well. I love my MA and RI homes, but I still love my PA, too. :) Hugs - Nini

You are right, it totally reminds me of New England too. I really miss NE this time of year. Our family used to vacation in Maine (Belfast) but my friends and I would vacation in Barnstable and Hyannis. You can include me for being a Yankee at heart :)

Oh Sharon, you never cease to amaze me with your recipes! I, however, am not a good crust maker, baker or dessert gal, so I may do this as more of a rustic pie, with a large uneven crust, filled with the goodies, and loosely folded over the top.
Sounds SOO good.

Sharon, that pie recipe sounds fabulous!! I am currently in Burlington, Vermont and it is in full Fall glory!! We spent Wednesday in Camden , Maine and visited an apple preservationist . He specializes is bringing back local heirloom varieties for orchard growers. Apple U-Pick places are everywhere and porches are decked out with mums and pumpkins . The leaves have been so gorgeous and many trees are in full color. The drive up to Vermont , in the higher elevations , was a spectacular carpet of colors. I would have loved to have a slice of this pie while sitting with a mountain view. Now that would have been are e of perfection!! New England is truly beautiful in the Fall. It is as beautiful as shown in calendars and photos. We are enjoying this cool change from months of oppressive Florida heat and humidity!! I have been able to wear a wool sweater!! Happy Dance!!

This looks delicious and I bet the aroma as it bakes would be divine. I'm going to try this too. Thanks for sharing the recipe with us. The Chicago area has flipped from summer to fall again, so this weekend would be a good one for baking.

Thanks for the recipe Sharon! It sure does make one miss New England. I will have to give it a try. We are having cooler weather this week. Not quite the fall weather we will have in a couple of weeks but nice and cool to bake.

Lisa, a rustic version of this sounds so good! I am still working on a pie crust recipe, I'm not totally satisfied yet :)

Again, thank you Sharon for the recipe! I baked it up this afternoon it was superb! My husband and I just had a piece and we both agreed this is the best pie ever. I have an excellent pie crust recipe that I used from "Homemade With Love" by Jennifer Perillo. It has cornmeal in it that makes for a sturdier crust to work with & holds up to a juicy filling. Let me know if you'd like the recipe.

Here you go Sharon. This is an excellent pie crust that doesn't tear and is delicious.

FOOLPROOF PIE CRUST
Makes Two 9-inch Pie Crusts

1/3 cup yellow cornmeal
1 1/2 cups unbleached all purpose flour, plus more for dusting
1/2 teaspoon fine sea salt
1 teaspoon granulated natural cane sugar
1 cup very cold unsalted butter, cut into 16 pieces
1 large egg
1 1/2 teaspoons white vinegar
2 tablespoons ice cold water

Add the cornmeal, flour, salt, and sugar to the bowl of a food processor. Pulse 1 to 2 times to mix well. Add the butter and pulse a few more times, until the dough forms a sandy-looking mixture, about 4 to 5 one-second pulses. Add the egg, vinegar, and water. Pulse until it forms a solid ball of dough, about 8 to 10 one-second pulses.

Dump the ball of dough out onto a well-floured counter surface, and knead it gently once or twice.

Divide the dough into two equal pieces and refrigerator while you make your pie filling. Roll one disc of dough into a circle large enough to fit your pie plate. Proceed with the directions for whichever pie recipe you are using.

Dawn, that crust sounds amazing!
I am attempting Sharon's pie tonight, but (don't hate me), I have a premade crust in the freezer that I want to use up, some older canned cranberries (I will omit the juice since these are pretty juicy), and some older raisins and apples. So, it will be kind of a use it up attempt at the pie, and the NEXT time, I will use all fresh, and Dawn's crust recipe!
I'll let you know how my "leftover" pie recipe comes out!

Good luck with the pie Lisa. I had to use frozen organic cranberries since the fresh ones aren't in our Whole Foods yet. I also switched out the cranberry juice for tart cherry juice that added another dimension to the flavors. The raisins I had were the golden sultan ones that plumped up beautifully. So you can see there's many ways to put your own spin on a pie. Mine was superb and I have the ingredients to make another one this week.
