Took a drive a few miles out of town on Saturday and spotted an estate sale. Found this and bought it on the spot. Had to take it apart to get it out of her house and brought it home where she rests in the front room. I am SO excited to begin my new adventure. I've always wanted to learn how to weave rag rugs and at present I don't have a clue where to begin. I do know that I will have to replace the wire heddles (?) as they are rusty and look pretty tough. Otherwise, she is sound as a dollar and ready for for work.

Any suggestions regarding where to begin or where to find replacement parts for a Union #36 Rug Loom (Boonsville, NY) please advise!!

Mel

Actually, I did just stumble across this site earlier in the evening....

http://www.greatnorthernweaving.com/equip_heddles.asp

Right here in the Great State of Michigan---Kalamazoo

The "twisted" heddles run about $24.00 for 100!

Do you weave "Oldbittyhen?"

Melody, my heddles look bad but are not broken, so I use mine and they work just fine, good luck with your new jewel, I am not sure if my loom is a union or what , but I can feel thumb prints in the beater bar, I just love it! Great Northern is a great place to get supplies, things have gone up about 250% since the first time I ordered the first time!

I located some newer "used" heddles on Ebay last night and placed a bid. My husband is a welder and will sand blast the existing reed which isn't very bad at all but does show some rust.

The loom is very sturdy and I am amazed at the condition it is in considering the age. They stopped making the Union #36 (Boonsville, NY) in 1940.

Was it a challenge learning how to weave?

I love the idea that you have actual warn indentation where the weaver placed her hands!

You will need to bolt you loom to the floor or when you start weaving it will walk!

Oh Melody you are so lucky. I have wanted an 8 harness loom since I used on in college. Unfortunately, I have neither the space nor the money. <sigh>

It's a 2 harness rug loom and I paid a grand total of $25.00 for it plus some weaving books thrown in for good measure oh...and the original Union#36 manual.

I know-I'm so excited to get going!

If you have the manual it should show you step by step what to do. Is there anyone you know that weaves that could walk you through it, I went to a ladies house one afternoon and she showed what to do, then just follow the manual. I can't find the book I have and I don't remember the name of it.

Hay ya'll.

Nice score...I picked one up at a yard sale but I don't think it is complete. Maybe it is a table top model. I got it for 6.00 and need to set it up or figure out if I am missing anything.

Hugs and prayers, Daizy
