I planted a cold frame with lettuce, green onions, Swiss chard and carrots last week. This is my first cold frame attempt in fall but I am hoping for nice produce this fall and winter.

Does anyone else use a cold frame for fall crops and what have you had success with?

Hi Emily,

I have been wanting to try out a cold frame in fall as well. You will have to keep us all posted on the progress. Posting pics would be great too!

So it has been 22 days since I planted my cold frame. I am reporting in my lettuce is about 3 inches tall. The carrots and green onions and swiss chard are all up now. The parsnips aren't but I am not surprised as they took a long time this spring too. We have had probably 6 frosts and 2 hard ones. They seem to be doing well. We have been blessed with an Indian summer here so most days they get to get warmed up to 60 degrees or more but our nights are usually below 40 or so. I will get some pictures soon but I am optimistic we will have some great produce in the next few months.

Sounds very hopeful! How big is it? I would love a fresh salad this time of year - this might be something I'll have to try next year. And I thought it was cold here - at least we haven't had any frost yet.

My husband got an old shower door as the top then built a wood frame for it that is about two feet tall. The door hinges open the way a door usually would and we prop it open with old ski poles cut to the right height. I need to take some pictures because he also had the forethought before assembly to have our daughters paint the outside for me and it is a beauty of a cold frame because of it.
