A little kitty chose my home to come up to. She is still very young maybe 8 weeks, Her canine teeth are in but her other teeth are still very small. MY grandkids want to keep her. There mom said yes but not till after they move. The other day she started not eating good and being listless. I was petting her , oh can she purr, andway I felt a scab on her neck, pulled the scab off and found a hole. Called my sister , she said it sounds like bot fly larve. Called the vet and he told me what to do. cut open the area and take the larve out. Ok I did that. It was grose but I did it. She is eating and drinking but not as good as I think she should. I used to breed doggies but I know nothing about kitties. Will it take her a while to really feel like her old self? Does anyone know anything about this. All I knew was when she came she was very skinny. She did not have fleas or ear mites. She actually looked to be in good condition except for being skinny. She was eating good and now she eats a little. Her eyes are clear and she is just as sweet as she can be. anyone with any info please help??

I foster for an animal organization and I've raised two kittens in the last few years. I always make sure to bring rescued cats into the vet for an initial checkup regardless of how they appear physically. It's not uncommon for stray cats to have fleas and worms, which I believe should always be treated. Depending on where you are it might be expensive to do a checkup, but it's worth looking into. Sometimes if you mention that you've rescued the cat a vet might be willing to adjust the costs, but I've only heard of this, I've never experienced it myself.

Make sure the kitten is warm and hydrated. Most people suggest giving kittens wet food over kibble because it helps with hydration and some kibble is just total crap. When my big guy was a kitten I became very scared for him because he became weak and would not eat his food, he was also having diarrhea. I took him to the vet and they said he was dehydrated (this was last summer when it was disgustingly hot) so they administered him an IV and gave me a powder to mix in his food to boost his electrolytes. He fully improved in one day! It made a huge difference. You can check to see if your kitten is hydrated if you gently pinch the skin at the scruff (of the neck). The skin loses it's elasticity if the kitten becomes dehydrated, it will therefore take longer to go back to normal. If she is showing signs of dehydration then you should take her to the vet.

Although she looks normal kittens can also suffer from FLV or other illness which can only be determined through testing. Our first cat was FLV positive and he also was a little listless in the beginning but as he got older his health improved. You can test her for FLV now but it will likely create a false positive, so it's recommended you wait until she's a little bit older. I also have to add that FLV + cats can live perfectly normal lives, so if she ever does come up positive don't let anyone persuade you to put her down, that's a load of rubbish.

I definitely recommend taking her for a vet check up! Given that she's still fairly young, I also strongly suggest getting some kitten milk from the pet store, it comes in a powder form and you mix it with lukewarm water. It's chock full of good nutrients. We had our cat on it for almost two months, he loved it. Beyond using it for weaning it's just good to use it for their growing bodies. *Don't use any milk other than cat milk, cats have difficulty digesting other types of milk.

She's a beautiful little buff tabby, I hope she's feeling better soon. :)

Holly, lots of good advice for Beverley.

Beverley, I'm so proud of you for handling the larvae. You're doing a good thing for Miss Kitty.

well I found another one on the other side so I pulled it out too. Her head she keeps tilting it to the one side, so, I called the vet and he is going to meet me so he can take a look at her and possible give her some antibotics I am very fortunate to have access to this vet. He is retired and he volunteers and does spays and neuters for free and then they let him do some other operations for people at a lower rate. so, he said he would meet me cause he is going to go to his daughters for dinner, he is a wonderful asset to have access too!!! so she is going to see the vet here in just a few minutes...I'll keep you updated!

Vet cut both of the places open more so they can drain and gave her a shot and some meds to take. He said it looks she will be fine. He thinks she tilts her head cause the toxins may be affecting the muscles on that side. and he charged me $10. He is wonderful!!

His daughter told my SIL that he is retired and just loves animals and wants to keep up with his skills. He is a wonderful find. I would like to make him something or find something to say thank you but I have no idea what. I will have to think on that.!!
