A Barnyard Experiment: Today was the first day that we've had everyone - two Dexter cows, three horses (which we let graze the pasture - they aren't ours), two roosters, 17 hens, nine Suffolk lambs (our "market" lambs that remain) and two Icelandic/Navajo-Churro sheep (from Aunt Jenny), one golden retriever, one cat, one three-year-old, one three-month-old and one thirty-five-year-old out in the field. I opened all of the gates and just let everyone have a field-day.
The weather was gorgeous, everyone ran around for a while and then settled down - the horses were angels with the sheep, which I worried a bit about, and the cows and chickens ignored everyone. The sheep ran around checking almost every fence line, and everyone else pretty much did their own thing - the three-year-old spent most of his time poking holes in the ground with a stick.
Now, everyone is safely tucked back in their respective nighttime quarters. What an adventure! I don't know what exactly prompted me to do it, but, boy, was it fun !!!

Sounds like fun was had by all. All us creatures like to be together once in awhile. Wonder what stories they will tell.

Sounds like a great time, Libbie. You have Dexter cows?? We are thinking about those as well. Any problems with them? Can you tell us more info. We are on 4 acres and think this will be the answer to fresh milk.

Thanks, gals! Some days are just surprises - and wonderful ones, at that!
Birdi - I'm a newcomer to the world of cows, and I have a Dexter mama and babe - so far no problems, but I purchased them from a friend who I know takes really good care of her animals. I want to learn how to milk with her - I haven't yet - so I don't have anything to report there. I'd say that for sure 4 acres is enough for a Dexter or two, or three, or four..... They are SO small - mine are all black and really, about as tall as a Great Dane (and, for better or worse, about as wide as they are tall!). I have to say, however, that I still dream of a Jersey - my very own Mona (Aunt Jenny's jersey - I know you're new, so you may not know her, but we're all on a first-name basis with Jenny's cow!).
