Husband's work is across a big field from a turkey farm (there are turkey farms all over our county) anyway one of the customers brought in a baby turkey from out back of the store today and steve named it Hooper and brought him home. He had to have made quite a trek to get so far from the farm!! He is in a box in our family room now and doing well so far. Hopefully he will be our new little (big) pet. I had a pet turkey named Earl for years when we lived in Calif. He lived with the goats and had a real identity crisis. I think he thought he was a goat or sheep and didn't get along with the chickens, ducks, or any other companion turkey I tried to put him with. He died at about 6 years of age..a very overweight and happy turkey. Keep good thoughts for little Hooper. He looks to be maybe a week old..feathered out wings but but the rest still fuzz. He is eating well and being very quiet so I think he is warm enough. He is all white...like all "eating" turkeys usually are.

Oh Jenny, that is so nice! Keep him warm and I know he will make a wonderful new pet and family member for you! Wish I had one! I'm trying to get a chicken (house) built! Best to Lil' Hooper!

I love having Turkeys. We gave our breeders away because we just didnt have the pen space for them. I heard the the production white meat Turkeys don't live that long because they are bred to gain so much weight. Have you found this to be true? The turkeys we had were naragansetts(sp?). We have gotten ornamental pheasents. They are so beautiful. We got Red goldens and lady Amherts. Have fun with Hooper.

Yes..they don't normally live very long since they get so so so fat. My Earl weighed well over 50 lb...and was such a waddler!! Before him I had a bronze breasted named Clyde..he was much leaner and probably would have lived much longer..a neighbor's dog dug under the fence and got him. (that was horrible..he was a mess and didn't make it) I would LOVE to get another breed of turkey..and I think pheasants are so pretty!! I tried them once and the male killed all three of the females..maybe sometime I will give that another shot.
So far Hooper is still doing okay. He is set up in a nice warm (safe from the cat) brooder box in the cellar right now so hopefully he will be fine. He had a hard day for sure.

Little Hooper died overnight. It was pretty sad, but I hope at least that his last few hours were warm and happy. He had quite a hard day yesterday.

OH NO Jenny! I am so sorry... I was excited for you to have Hooper. Are your children doing okay with his death? It's so sad.

| So sad for little Hooper. The stress of striking out on his own from the farm must have been too much for him. Glad you gave him a safe haven for a few hours. |

Oh, Jenny - I'm so sad for you and happy and sad for Hooper. Sometimes lambs do a very similar thing at our house. I am glad that little Hooper had a snuggly last night.... (((hugs!)))

| Hi Jenny,I'm sorry to hear Hooper didn't make it. We had 4 turkeys for awhile.They would go over to the Inn next door and scare the guests! I would get a call to come get my turkeys! Our last one (others eaten by dogs) was such a pet.We used to have to sneak out of the house so he wouldn't follow us down the road.One time a neighbor came to the door.He made the mistake of stopping his car and talking to Tom the T. and realized when he drove off that Tom was running after him.We had joggers pick up the speed cause T. would jog with them! Nothing as funny as watching a turkey jog down the road! he finally had to go though when he decided my 3 year old was worth courting.He'd do a little dance around my son and his wattle would get red.Didn't trust him unfortunately. He also got real excited when I'd rev up the truck thinkin' it would scare him back to the house.No luck!,gobbled louder! |

Oh how sad... atleast he was warm and safe for his final hours. Sorry for all of you Jenny. That's the hard part about being a farm girl, sometimes we do all we can and it's still not enough.

kinda made me want a pet turkey again..I was liking the idea alot..so maybe in the spring I will get one. Maybe not a white one though..
