Not a good day for me at the thrift store. I was shopping away, you know , happy to be finding good stuff so I could come home and go online and make you all feel bad because I found great things and you didn't. Well while I was there my wallet was stolen, fair amount of money, credit cards, licence, social security card, medical card, library card, well you get the idea. I should have made headline news tonight but I see I didn't, so maybe it wasn't that big of a deal. So of course I couldn't pay for the fun stuff in my cart.So came home to all the kids, cause they were all here today, Richard gave them all our credit cards to cut up, one of the kids made a small airplane with one of them, fun or what? we called all the banks and stores and told them the good news.They are sending me new cards express mail because they like me. I think the lesson I learned is don't carry a red purse, there is something about red that makes people crazy. So when dinner time came and I had five extra people show up that I hadn't planned on it didn't seem like a big deal. Of course that might be because I'am in a delayed state of shock.

I am sorry to hear that my husband lost his wallet two years ago on the way to California. One year latter the CHP called saying had we lost any thing yeah a wallet my husband said jokingly they said well we have it. When did you lose it Thanksgiving last year is what he said. The police officer couldn't believe it that the wallet was perfectly intacted after being on the side of a highway for an entire year. It still had all its credit cards, id, so on in it. The cash was missing but the fun story was my husband had some favorite pictures back. I wish the same for you but much much sooner. Sorry to hear of the trouble.

What a rotten thing to have happen. I'm so sorry. That happened to my mother-in-law a few years ago in Kroger. It is such a creepy feeling to know that someone else has your things. Maybe you will get it back- like Sunshine's husband! I hope so.

Oh Nancy...what a bummer. I only had my wallet stolen one time and I was too young for credit cards and didn't have more than '$20 in it either..but what a pain to get all that stuff replaced!!! Mine was tossed in a lagoon and a fisherman found it a couple days later..all wrecked of course and the cash was gone. I hope you get yours back!!
and like Gloria said, I hope the thrift store saved the neat stuff you had found for you!!!!

Oh, yuck, Nancy - I'm so sorry to hear about that. Getting your wallet stolen is SUCH a pain - it's not just the money, it's the hassle of replacing things. Ugh. My good "can-do" farmgirl wishes are headed your way!!!

That's just the pits, Nancy! I can't believe it -- what meanie did that to you??? Don't stop using that red purse, however, chickie. It signifies that the wearer is cool. (Oh, that's right, I have a red purse too.)

Nancy, so so sorry about your wallet....I had my "lifted once in a store called "Towers" sort of a 50's version of Walmart.....Never did get it back and Had no credit cards at that time only about 20 bucks....Never ever went back to that store again..... I usually try to look purse in trunk and just carry some cash in jeans pocket...

Nancy! What a crummy thing to happen and at one of our favorite places to shop! Our GW had an incident like yours in the Spring but the elderly lady held onto her purse (foolishly) and was knocked down. Luckily you weren't hurt, just your pride and faith in other people. Hope you are back to your fun self real soon!
My Mom had our weekly grocery money stolen from her purse while we were at the DMV when I was small and I remember she cried for hours because that was all there was for that week. Also, I don't think she believed that people were really that mean to steal from a woman with 2 kids w/her.
DH has "lost" his wallet twice and both times it has been returned with everything intact except the money. One time it had our plane tickets to Colorado in it!
Stay away from red purses and I hope some of your stuff is returned to you ASAP.You need a hug!

Oh Nancy that just sucks..sorry gals, nothing else quite fits this situation. My purse is hot pink...maybe I will change it to a nice neutral shade? I have become such a freak with my purse these days. I find myself clutching it tightly on my shoulder or even slung over my knee at resturants. So sorry you had such a rotten day Hun...and then extras for dinner! I would have had to lay down with a case of the vapors!

No no no! Don't get rid of the red purse!!! I post in defense of red purses everywhere!!! If we give in and only carry ugly brown purses, will that stop purse snatching? I think not!

You guys are hiarious in spite of the unlucky subject we are talking about! Nancy Jo, you have a great sense of humor.
I had my purse taken at the grocery store once when I was 22. I had a straw bag that was open at the top like a beach bag. Well, someone nicely reached into it and took my wallet. I got to the checkout and rummaged around in my beach bag purse thinking "Did I leave my billfold at home? Where on earth is it?" I could not bring myself to think that someone had actually taken something right out of my bag while I was nearby!
The stolen wallet came back to me by postal service several months later. The money was gone, all the personal info was there, but they also took my postage stamps! Ironic, huh? Maybe the post office used them to mail my wallet to me.

This world is in such a sad state right now. Being in the city means I am a lot more vigilant about my surroundings, and I always lock things up now. I remember when you could trust most folks and locking up the house when you weren't home wasn't necessary. Now you have to keep it locked even when you are home, and opening the garage door means checking first to make sure no one is watching while the door is open. They even steal your garbage. How terrible.
Sad to say, but paranoia is the general mood of the day...

Nancy, here is some good news...your apron goes out this week! as soon as I get the chance to get to thepost, Zoe is under the weather righ tnow, so we are a bit housebound currently, but as soon as she is recouping, off to the post it goes!

People are so heartless sometimes; I really hope whoever sunk to such a low truly truly was desperate for money to feed a baby or buy medicine and is suffering mega guilt at any rate. And I am here to tell you do NOT stop carrying that red bag. I too belong to what must be the Red Bag Society; all the cool chicks carry them, so sling that bad boy over your arm and strut your stuff! Confidence can be intimidating (ha). Nance |

Sorry to hear about your wallet, Nancy Jo. I love how you said it must not have been that big a deal because it wasn't on the news. Glad you can laugh about the situation!
I've only had my wallet stolen once and it was way out in the country at a swimming hole. They stole my clothes from the bank, wallet included - and my glasses too! I have this recurring day dream where I go back to that small town and find my favorite tshirt for sale in a thrift store.
Now, my dad was robbed this summer just down the street from his own house and that did make the news. He didn't have any wallet on him to give to the kids, so they beat him badly. He almost died (seriously). So staying off the news is definitely a good thing... |

My goodness Amie, thoses stories are a lot worse then mine. So sorry about your Dad, that must have been awful. And you with no clothes or glasses.
I really appreciate all the comments and support from all of you,it kind of fills up that empty feeling. Like Nance from France said, I just hope it was for a good reason, like diapers or food, but if that were the case, all the they had to do was ask and I would have gone to the store and bought them what they needed, within reason of course, hey how about that six pack of beer, and then I say ah, NO.

Luckily I wasn't skinny dipping! The swimming hole experience was so ludicrous that I couldn't stay mad for long. Someday I'll post the full story...it's a good one.
What happened to my dad was just evil. I'm glad you didn't get hurt.
But I know what you mean about that empty feeling, no matter how minor the crime. It's unfortunate that the kind of people we'd like to help almost never ask for it, and other people take what they want without asking.

Thanks for asking, Bonnie. My dad is much better, but he is still out of work (on disability). If you saw the story on the news when it first happened, you only saw the beginning. He was attacked by a gang of teenagers with a gun over 4th of July weekend. He had walked up to the corner to see the end of an event at the high school. My dad has lived in the same neighborhood all his life and it has always been a very safe and respectable place to live until the last year or two. The neighbors were up in arms and called a news conference on public safety which our new police chief attended, and that's what the news was covering. Well, at the time it appeared that my dad had a concussion (from being hit over the head) and that was all. But during the week after the meeting his bruises (from being kicked and punched) just got worse. One day he collapsed and had to be rushed to the hospital. His spleen had ruptured and he almost bled to death internally. So it took most of the summer for him to recover from the concussion and the surgery both. Now he is in physical therapy for damage to his rotator cuff. Hopefully he will be back to work soon, but the doctor keeps putting it off a few more weeks. As you can imagine, it's been pretty hard for him to provide for the family on disability pay and my mom had to leave her part time job to take care of him and the little kids (they babysit for two granddaughters and are raising another little boy, all of the kids are under two).
But the community has been just great about the whole thing. That's the really good news in all this. In fact, his neighbor across the street probably saved his life. She had given him a walkie talkie to contact her if he needed help when my mom had to leave the house and she was the one who got him to the hospital when his spleen ruptured. And I've met people recently who moved into our part of town from a more fashionable neighborhood because they liked the way the neighbors responded to the crisis.
So I don't know whether to be more discouraged because my home is being overrun by vicious little thugs, or encouraged because the good people here look out for their own. It has been really frustrating to not be able to go outside and just walk around. After all, that's why we bought our house here. We have my parents and grandparents, the post office, the grocery store, the library and the dentist all within a ten minute walk in abeautiful neighborhood that is laid out like a park (thank you, Frederick Law Olmsted!). And now we have to drive everywhere.
But that's enough griping...I'm thankful that my dad didn't die. He's a great guy and I'm glad he has such good friends in the community. |
