I'm so ready for spring! I've already begun making plans and preparations which got me to thinking about my compost bin. It's a tumbler compost bin, and I'm sad to say that I've been neglecting it. The last time I checked on it everything was broken down and looked and smelled good, but it was really dry and dusty. I figure that it's still good to use, but I wanted to make sure. If it's still usable, what do I need to do to freshen it up? Do I just wet it down and turn it until it's nice and moist? Would like some advice.
Also, how do y'all store your excess compost? I'm pretty sure I have more than I'm going to need and I'd like to get it out of my bin so I can start to fill it up again.
One last question. I have a parrot (Cockatoo) and I've heard that it's ok to put the used papers from his cage in with the compost, but wanted to make sure. And will the heat of the compost bin be enough to keep the seeds in his food from sprouting?
Would appreciate any tips. Thanks in advance.

I just got the Earth Machine today! I read rave reviews about it being perfect for small gardens. It is sturdy and for $110.00 very big! It has a door to retrieve small loads from the bottom. I googled" Things you can compost" and there are some good sites, the most common of course, Fruit, Veggie peelings, Dead head flowers, pinecones, grass, newspaper, paper plates, which are high in carbon. Egg shells, Coffee and Tea grounds with the filters. Hair, High in protein. Ask your stylist to save you a bag for a week! I am a retired stylist and I use to do that for clients all the time!
I am excited about learning more! I will check back here, to see what the Long time Composters use!
