Hi girls!

We buy a side or whole pig from a couple of friends a couple of times every year, so it suddenly dawned on us to ask if they have any manure to sell me for our garden. Lo and behold, my girlfriend emailed me back and said they have plenty of pig and cow manure, and we can have whatever we need for FREE - FREE, God bless them! - and that we'll just need to pick it up. Woo Hoo! (My poor van...)

My questions are:

(1) Do we need to age it for very long, or can it go right into the garden?

(2) How do we determine how much we'll need?

(3) How soon should we add it to the garden soil before planting?

And, finally:

(4) Where we live, all of our neighbors live pretty close - there's barely room for a walkway between our homes... How bad is this going to smell, and how long is it going to last? In other words, how bad are they going to hate us, and for how long? LOL!!!

If there's anything else you think I need to know, please do tell! I'm so excited, but haven't a clue what I'm doing with this!!!

Thank you for your help!

Hugs -

Hi Nini,
Wanted to give you this link, I think it will help you make a decision. I have been a subscriber to OG for years, lots of really good and usable info in their mag and site.

Thank you SO much, Teri! You're awesome! They definitely raise all their animals organically, so that's excellent! She seemed to be saying we can use it in the garden right away, but I'm not sure if it has been well aged/composted, so I'm going to have to check. If not, we'll just compost it! I'm just not sure how long composting it would be necessary... I'll see what else I can find out. :) And I will DEFINITELY take precautions!

I'm so excited and grateful! Thank you for your help!
