Peggy. I used Muslin so far, for the ones I have made. For my Bunny I got a thicker one, and it did well, I thought. Tone Finnanger's fabric can be ordered from the UK but so expensive and the shipping is costly! I have bought my fabric at Hobby Lobby and at Hancock's and Fabric.com has a big selection and good prices. They have a linen mix that looks great for about $8.00 a yard. I have ordered from them for years, and Have always been happy with it. At Hancock's here, the linen was $18.00 a yard.
I bought some tan broadcloth and so far have made a body out of it and I like the way it looks!

I have used muslin but I am guessing that toni F, who writes the books probably uses linen. Over in Europe they seem to use that a lot for things that we use muslin. Maybe they grow flax a lot more than we do. We grow the cotton over here, I think. I did look at the fat quarters of the fat quarters too on Amazon and yes they were out of my budget!!! hehehehe

ConnieI have ordered books from the Depository before. Usually something I am looking for and buy used through Amazon. I have always been happy with them.
And thanks for your input Beverly and Connie. I felt pretty sure the fabric looked like linen.
The Hobby Lobby just opened a store in Bangor and the next time I make the trip I want to stop in. There is an A C Moore there and a Joannes so when I go I am going with cash in my pocket!
I will check out Fabric.com too. Is Hancocks a website? I am going to look for them this morning. Keepsake quilting might be a good place for the clothing fabrics too. I used to get their catalogs and I love a lot of their stuff. They used to have retro 30s and 40s prints and I just loved them.
Let's face it I just love fabric and yarn and pretty paper. Haha!

Peggy, me too!! also, check the good wlll, lots of dresses can be used and kids clothes, I bought a pair of toddler Jeans to make a Tilda denium jacket and it cost $1.00 they were brand new with the tag still on them! for the pair of jeans, and it made 2 jackets! I don't like some of the open weave linen, in some of the Tilda books you can see the seam stretching too wide on the doll's face.

Well I found out what the Tilda bodies are made from...are you ready??? WOOL! A fine grade wool made in Ireland. A lady on the Craftsy website has made some and was very informative with her comments. She doesn't buy the actual Tilda skin either (too expensive) but it looks as though she does use a wool. I commented and asked her what her best substitute was. lol. I don't think I will make one from wool but you never know. Any way my Tilda summer book came and I love the overalls she is wearing. I think I want some for myself.

ConnieI noticed that too. Now that I know what the fabric is I am surprised they are not more stretchy. I have some beautiful wool but it is black. I suppose I could make a black bunny. I think I have some grey too. Thrift shops and Goodwill are great places for material! I have even bought things at Label shopper because I loved the material. hee hee

Connie which books do you have? I have the fairytale and the summer. Christmas is on it`s way. The fairy tale book has painted hair on the dolls and it is really kind of cute. I am eyeing the winter delights one because I love that Polar bear!

Well, I was waiting for Bloom to answer if she wants in on this one to make up a 6th person for us but I have not heard anything, so I am going to go ahead and make the list cause I am going away for 2 weeks so, here goes.... OK Connie is going to take on two, so she will have Beth and Pennie and myself and Peggy will be swapping this time. I thought the next time I will wait a month or two and maybe next time we will swap any of the dolls or animals that are in the tilda books. So, that way you can think ahead after this one. hehehehehehe Hey anyone who has the pattern for the overalls, would you mind sending me a copy? I think those are so cute!!! Let me know if this is good for everyone? Happy Doll making!!!

HI Beverly,
I have always loved the Tilda Dolls, but don't have a good pattern to make one. I glanced the last swap and someone mailed a pattern to share.
I missed this swap, as we have an extensive camping schedule this Spring, and most of my sewing will take place in a car (LOL)... but maybe there will be another swap down the line.
If anyone has a simple Tilda pattern, and would be willing to share, I would appreciate it. OH.. and the Tilda Bunny was absolutely wonderful!!!
