Ok--so I took my knitting class, started a scarf, started and finished another scarf, and now I'm thinking I don't just want to make something long anymore :) I want to knit a hat--like your typical fisherman type knit hat...Does anyone have a SIMPLE pattern that I can use? I can cast on, and I can garter stitch.....I suppose I could purl, too, but I'm a little squeamish. I'd like to make my husband one for Christmas, so any help you can give would be great!

OH!!! I have a GREAT pattern we used in my beginning knitting class ages ago. It's super easy and you don't have to knit in the round. It's also really fast since you use bulky yarn and a size 15 needle. Email me with your address and I'll drop a copy in the mail for you.

I used to be scared of knitting in the round when I was a new knitter, but my local yarn store (LYS) lovelies proved to me that it truly is easier than knitting back and forth and stitching up a seam! I highly recommend going YOUR LYS for tips and help or to this web site:

and searching out a video for knitting in the round help. There are SO many adorable hats you can make and when you're done knitting, you're done! No seams! Here's a great pattern:
Yarn: Lamb's Pride Bulky, 1 skein
Needles: US9 16" circulars + US11 16" circulars
Gauge: To fit an average size woman's head
1. With US9 needles, cast on 70 stitches. Place a stitch marker to denote the beginning of your round.
2. Carefully joining your stitches, so as not to twist your work, work the hat in knit 1, purl 1 (k1,p1) for 1-2 inches.
3. Switch to US11 needles and continue knitting in Stockinette Stitch (Stst) until the hat is 6 inches from the beginning.
***KNITTING IN THE ROUND MEANS THAT YOU DON'T HAVE TO PURL TO GET STOCKINETTE STITCH, YOU JUST GO 'ROUND AND 'ROUND JUST KNITTING!!!***
4. Decreases:
* Knit 11, knit 3 together (k3tog), five times around
* knit next round
* k9, k3tog, five times around
* knit next round
* k7, k3tog, five times around
* knit next round
* k5, k3tog five times around
* knit next round
* k3, k3tog, five times around
* knit next round
* k1, k3tog, five times around
* knit next round
* knit 2 together (k2tog) around
5. break yarn, and using a tapestry needle, weave your yarn end through the remaining 5 stitches - insert needle through the top of the hat to the "wrong" side and weave end in to hide - weave in starting end too.

Don't worry, this hat IS EASY. It was one of the first projects I made!

| www.savethechildren.org and www.warmupamerica.org have posted simple skullcap patterns for babies, they are coordinating a volunteer effort for knitters to make caps for low-birthweight babies in 3rd world countries as part of the "Caps to the Capital" campaign. It's a great way to practice your skills & do something charitable at the same time. You can do straight rows, or easily convert to in the round (that way you can knit all the way & not have to purl). |
