Our 15 year old dog, Chula has been doing well on incontinence medicine and arthritis pain meds for over a year. While she is slow and losing weight, she seemed, until yesterday, to have a fairly good quality of life. She had a seizure on New Years Eve and recovered after that but today she is vomiting a lot and having incontinence issues. She does not seem to be in any pain. How do you know when its time to let her go. How did you all make your decisions? I'll follow the vets recommendation and let he go if he thinks its best. Its just so darn hard. She had a big party on Dec 1st for her 15th birthday and we do have some great memories. My 20 year old dd was only 5 when we adopted Chula girl. This is going to be so hard. |

Dearest Connie I have not the words that can guide you in such a hard and painful decision. It is a path I have gone down, they become our children in fur coats, a part of our hearts and our lives. Rely on your vet's advice. My thoughts and prayers our with you, Chula and your family. Hugs Karla |

(((hugs))) to you! Our dog has been having seizures off and on for the last year. A day or two after she has one, she vomits and has issues with incontinence.... then she'll be her old loving self again. Praying for you!!!!

My heart goes out to you. We want to do what is best for our furry friends---when Boxer was having incontinence issues, as well as canine dementia, I just tried to make him as comfortable as possible. But after an apparent heart attack, he just wasn't the same and i knew it was time. It's a very difficult decision. As one vet put it:"There comes a time when you have to end their suffering and begin your own". Chula knows she is loved and that will never change. I am praying for you and sending hugs. Cindy

It is such a hard decision. In all those years our pets become a part of our family. My hardest loss was Jake, 80 pounds of love and devotion. When his hips got bad we had to help him stand. He stayed right by me as I worked in the garden, if I got too far from him he would start to drag his hindquarters to get closer. When he started having incontinence issues he seemed absolutely horrified. We had never punished him for an accident so that wasn't it. Now quite a few years later I still miss him. Our pets trust us so much that keeping them too long for our onwn feelings can be an unkindness. Your vet should give you wise advice and my prayers will be with you and your family. Hugs, Susan

All of my animals, 2 dogs and a cat, told me when it was time to go. I don't really understand how but they did. My memories of them no longer hurt. You will know when it is time.

Are you ready to let her go? Sometimes our furbabies hang on because they know we are not ready to let them go. In the past, when I have looked at one of mine and wondered what to do, there came a day when I sat down, gathered them in my arms and said "it is okay to go on" and them told them some of our best memories together, just holding them until they wanted to get down or move. My sweeties went on to the Rainbow bridge within a few days, peacefully in their sleep.

Connie I am going through the same thing with my beloved dog Isis, I just keep telling myself I will know when it is time and have tried to stop worry about it so much and just enjoy the time I have with her, right now she is doing pretty good. My heart goes out to you because I certainly do know what you are going through. Roxanna |

Through many tears I want all who responded to know just how much your sharing has helped. It feels so good to know your not alone. Chula's Vet will be in the office at 3 today and we will see what he recommends. Will let you know what happens.![](icons/icon_smile_sad.gif)
REPRIEVE!! The Vet is not in this afternoon and I will not have the decision made by the Vet I don't like. Will go back in the morning and have a nice date night tonight with my furry girl. |

Oh, Connie - I'm so sorry to hear about your sweet Chula... Our girl Pawlee will be 14 on Valentine's Day, if she makes it. We're going through some of the same things you are, and it's just so heartbreaking. Our son grew up with her, too; he's really having a difficult time with it. The vet wants us to schedule an appointment to see her next week... we're just waiting to see what the weather brings. I dread what he is going to say; we want her to be around forever... but love tells us that the fields in Everafter are calling to her heart. We're grateful for the time we have left, and for the time to prepare our hearts, but... well, you know. Out of love we must do the best we can for our furbabies, no matter how difficult it will be. So, so hard. Lisa said what I've been thinking, and I believe she is very right: you will know; Chula will speak through her eyes. You'll be in my thoughts and prayers, truly. You're not alone - we're all here for you. Hugs and love - Nini

The best news we could have hoped for. The seizure aside, the Vet did a blood panel to check Chula's kidneys and said she has the insides of a two year old (and the outsides of a 100 year old), and that her heart and lungs are strong. With pain meds for arthritis and another for incontinence, she could have another one to two years. We were prepared to let her go. Boy, that old gal is a strong one. The vet assured us she is not in pain. He said he rarely sees a dog like her. GO CHU-CHU!!!!!!! Thank you farmgirl sisters for all your support. You helped me so much!!! |
