Well, it's official. I am a real bona-fide farmgirl for sure! I am raising four little baby chicks. They will stay indoors in my basement until April thaw and they can go in the coop. So excited! My neighbor's chicken hatched babies! First time chicken mom. I know they are chickens, I know I'm not supposed to name them or get close to them...but they are sooooooooooo cute! Fresh eggs this spring! Woo-hoo! (I'm even getting up at night to check on them and make sure they are warm)! For any of you that know me...this is BIG NEWS! Woo-HoO! All I want from Santa is a chicken coop!

Farmgirl Hugs,
Nicole

I envy you. I want chickens so bad but I know they'll take up a lot of my time and right now, I'm spreading myself pretty thinly. I love birds, soft little chickies are so cute. I love their little peeps. Go ahead and get attached to them, they can make good therapy animals. There's something so soothing about the way chickens cluck-cluck. What kind are they?

Name them, get attached, sit and watch their cute little chicken antics. There are 25 in our "baby pen" and I love sitting on a stool and watching them just do their thing. Dust baths are so entertaining, one starts and pretty soon they are all trying to get in her spot and then the little squabbles get started, I love all of it. Lately our yearly hens have been trying to all get in one nest and that purring, buzzing noise they make is so wonderful. Good luck and good egg hunting come spring. BYW a kitty-litter box filled with sand is a good dust bathtub for the small ones, I wait until they have all of their feathers before introducing one, they are less likely to eat the sand at that age.

They are a cross between a red Sussex and a Leghorn. Both good layers and friendly chickens. We have named them Spot, Nugget, Fluffy, and Peep. Spot is Audrey's favorite and Nugget is mine. She likes to snuggle and has fallen asleep with me holding her twice. If I put my hand in the tub, they will flee but Nugget will jump right in my palm. Love their little peeps and sounds. They are so sweet. Already getting their wing feathers. Kathryn, thanks for the pointers. I am welcoming any and all advice as these are my first chickens! So excited, I've even been getting up in the middle of the night to check on them. My friend Susan says I really need to stop that, lol!

Farmgirl hugs,
Nicole

Congratulations Nicole! I am so happy for you! Wahoooooo!
Was someone able to "sex" them for you, so you know they are all hens?
They grow SO fast, and are so much fun. I love each and every one of my girls, and they truly bring me such joy( not to mention awesome fresh eggs daily!)
Pictures please.........

Thanks, Michele. Oh my goodness! I am just in awe of these babies! They change everyday and I am constantly worrying or checking on them! I know how delicate they are at this stage. Each one has its own little personality! I am in farmgirl Heaven, I tell ya!

Congrats on becoming a real and true chicken mama!!! They are just the best are they not? Little puffs of spunk and personality.

I got my 5 brats in the leggy teen ager stage in July and they are just now starting to cluck and crow. Love these guys to pieces! I'm so glad to see you so happy.

Congrats Nicole! There are so many pictures on the internet of Chicken coops made from Re-cycled materials and ones that can be Made in a week end! My Hubby and I Chicken sat for our neighbors and they all had names. Maggie, this is her in the picture, would follow us home. I had no idea they would follow us around like they did. They stayed right with that Rooster, He is handsome! We have Cat, Dog, Ferret and Goldfish sat, but never Chickens, and it was so much fun!

Here's a peek at my babies. We've had them a week now and I can't believe how fast they grow! Doubled in size and already getting feathers. So cute.

Congrats on your cute chicks!!! I am so glad you get to have chickens where you live. It is a big deal to have chickens. I have been raising them for over 21 years now and get excited when I order new chicks to add to my aging flock. I let my chickens die of old age and get a few new ones every other year. You are going to love your new chickens. They all have different personalites and some of mine like to set on my lap to be petted.
Enjoy your new adventure and have fun with them.

Today's blog is about the chickens and their amazing story of how they came to be (pretty interesting tale). Also posted some hilarious chicken photos. Check it out here, and leave me a comment (or chicken "pointers".

Oh, Nicole, I'm so happy for you! I've wanted to raise chickens for years (my city currently doesn't allow it) so I can imagine how exciting and wonderful it is for you. I love all the photos and stories (blog included). If it were me, I'd be getting up several times a night, too.

Congrats again! I hope you give us many more updates and photos - I can't wait to see their development!

They are "teenagers" now,and one is confirmed a rooster. He cracks me up though, trying to crow already. We will have to see what happens, if we keep him or not.
