Hi Susie,

I use several brands of jars. I know they say you shouldn't use older ones, but I have been using them for years with no problems. Here are some of the kinds I have. Ball and Kerr, Atlas, Presto, Golden Harvest, and Mom's. I do have blue ones, but only use them for storing, raisins, nuts, etc. New ones around here seem to run from $7.95 a dozen to @12.95 a dozen. Hope this helps.

I mostly use ball and Kerr, most common new ones available locally.
Always check for tiny chips on the rim or little bitty cracks. I know some people who re-use mayonaise and other commercial jars, but don't think that is a good idea! They are made for one use. I'd rather recycle them and not risk losing the work of canning.

Cindy Lou is right. Always check for cracks or chips. I would stick with the Ball and Kerr if I was just starting out. I have never re-used mayonnaise or other jars for canning. You can't trust them.

I use Ball, Kerr, Atlas, and I have a few Presto and some Golden Harvest. Definitely check jars for the things mentioned by everyone else. I do not re use mayonnaise or any kind of jar not specifically for canning. Enjoy!

For my own purposes, I often use the older jars with rubber seals and bales. If I anticipate giving items away (such as Christmas and Holiday gifts), then I will often buy new jars with the screw bands and dome lids. That way, folks don't have to consider returning the jars to me. I agree with the cautions: always check for chips, nicks, and keep everything scrupulously clean. Never re-use the domes or the rubber seals.

My favorite jars are Ball. Never had a problem with them. It is unsafe to reuse mayo jars for canning. They are not tempered the same way and can shatter or let in bacteria.

Good luck!
