Hello all!
I was wondering if someone could give me some ideas on emptynester holidays. Hubby and I are on our own this year. No grands, no son, no daughter. Its not what we planned but that's our reality. I refuse to mourn this year but I am at a loss as to how to enjoy this season. We are definitely going to be more subdued. Any ideas how to celebrate this year?

No reason to be alone this holiday. Soup kitchens, Salvation Army, homeless shelters, nursing homes always are short staffed for the holidays and would welcome some company on what I'm sure is a difficult time for them as well. i wish you a joyous holiday season and many blessings. |

stuff and roast a couple of cornish hens, make small portions of all of what you would normanly bake and cook...invite some elderly neighbors to eat with you, or a few friends that are single...go for a walk, enjoy the leaves turning, spend some real quality time with your hubby...

Tracy - I'm feeling the subdued nature of the upcoming holiday here at our house, too. With no company coming, it's just the three of us. That can be nice, of course, but I'm like you - I want all my family around me, but it just can't be this year. I love Connie's suggestions - what lovely ideas to make the holiday so much more meaningful! And Tina's right - Cornish game hens can be so special. My girlfriend used to make them up for her and her Dad whenever it was just the two of them at the holidays. She'd make fancy side dishes, pull out the china and candles, set out beautiful flowers, have special desserts and champagne... she always knows how to make any holiday a special occasion, but I still can see how her Dad's eyes would light up when he walked in the door to see what she had prepared for him! VERY special! This year, I think I'm just going to invite everyone we know to stop by whenever they can throughout the day, and have lots of special hors d'oeuvres and finger desserts at the ready. I'm still going to make the big fancy spread I always do, so if anyone shows up during dinner, all the better! And even though it's a lot of work to make all that good stuff when it's really only the three of us, that's okay. There'll be plenty of leftovers for the following week! And people usually drop by throughout the holiday season, so I will always have something special to pull out of the freezer to serve. :) Also, we are going to visit the local Christmas light display in the evening - it's just something we do to close out Thanksgiving and welcome in the Christmas season - I love it! Maybe you and your hubby could take a long drive on Thanksgiving night and check out all the light displays in the neighborhoods in your area. A thermos of hot cider, a bag of cinnamon sugar donuts... Christmas music on the car radio... Holding hands while driving along and taking it all in... Sounds like a wonderfully warm, romantic way to celebrate at the end of the Thanksgiving holiday! :) Maybe you can find out what types of activities are going on in your area on Thanksgiving Day - a parade, a Christmas tree competition, heck, we even have a Turkey Trot race every year... There are always other ways to celebrate.. they may not be our ideal, but they sure can be a fun alternative!
Hugs -

Tracy, maybe you and your honey can start a new tradition in your home. Go for a drive or hike and bring a picnic lunch, go to a B & B for the holidays. We don't have any children, it has always been the two of us until last year when my Mom moved in. We have an open invite for folks at church and neighbors to come for dinner. We have had the best time being able to spend the holidays with our church family :)

Great ideas, every one of them. I'm going to make an effort to do some volunteer work. I wanted to go out of town for the holidays but hubby only has Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day off. Guess we'll come up with something special.
