We have a couple of Christmas traditions in our family and I was wondering if others would like to share theirs? We were always told that the first one to see a star on Christmas Eve got to open a present. I remember one year their was a huge storm so mom and dad made one out of tin foil and hung it in a tree. Neither Mom nor Dad are very artistic so it was the funniest looking lil star ever seen. I wish I would have saved it:) The other thing we do is also on Christmas Eve. This one has drawn a crowd of friends, friends of friends, neighbors and an occasional stranger. We put hay on the table, cover it with a sheet, turn out the lights and eat by lantern. It's probably not approved by most fire companies but it is in honor of the manger scene(in the 46 yrs that I've been around, there have been no fires as of yet:) I'm not sure if this is biblical or just are family tradition but we only eat pancakes, potato pancakes and sausage is the only meat. Maybe someone can explain that part to me? Anyways, was just wondering if you would like to share your traditions?

We always got a "punchie present." It's present you could shake, squeeze, feel all over anytime you wanted. Then on Christmas Eve you made your guess and got to open it. It was supposed to keep us from bothering the other presents. For the most part it really worked and it was always a fun competition to see who could get the closest guess. My sister and I would almost always get some kind of stuffed animal that sang a song. My mom would get an obscure antique. My daughters are just getting old enough to start up the tradition again.

I was just thinking of starting a thread like this!! So glad someone else was thinking of it too!!

My tradition comes from my mother-in-law. Every Christmas eve we get a new pair of pajamas to open. The tradition used to be that they were worn to bed then to open presents the next morning. Now that everyone is older and moved out it's not as easily done. Some times my husband and I change back into our pajamas after milking the cows before going to their house, but sometimes we don't - it depends on the year. And no presents are ever brought out until everyone leaves Christmas eve. (Even when there were no kids around.) It really keeps the excitement of Christmas morning to walk in and see all the gifts.

When I was a kid growing up all us "grandkids" (my siblings and cousins) would make decorations for Grandma's tree. We would cut up pieces of paper into little shapes and cut up straws into varying lengths. We would then use a needle and thread to make chains out of them. We also took styrafoam cups and covered them with foil and put ribbon through them to make bells. My grandma gave each of us one of our chains and bells a couple years ago. It brought back great memories!!
