Is there any kind of specific stitch to use when darning a sock? When would it be appropriate to darn a wool sock?

It really depends on the sock.

If it is knit and want to do a really good fix,

1) Clean up the area around the hole and secure the loose ends.
2) Find yarn that matches well and a set of knitting needles that make up the yarn in the same gauge as the sock.
3) Attach the yarn to the bottom of the hole and knit a patch a little longer and wider than the hole.
4) Sew it to the sock along the three unattached sides.

Or

Knit a patch slightly larger than the hole and sew it on the sock.

Or

Make a warp of yarn across the hole from top to bottom with a tapestry needle attaching the yarn just beyond the edges of the hole. With the same yarn and tapestry needle, weave the weft back and forth across the hole in the manner of a tabby weave. Push these yarns down tight but not too tight. Attach the yarn just beyond the side edges of the hole and try not to pull the crosswise threads too tight.

I hope this helps.

Do you know where I could purchase darning cotton like we used to use years ago? My daily socks are cotton and I can't find anything to darn them. My hubby wears orlon (spelling?) socks and I can use fingering yarn to mend his. What do you use?

Darning yarn, eh? I just use whatever I have on hand. Fingering and sock yarn is what I would use. I found several links on Google for purchasing darning yarn as well as how to videos. I haven't checked this out so let us know what you find.
