Well, ladies, I have all exterior walls, and all the interior walls are studded up. The trusses will be delivered Monday and the doors (except the front door -- explanation below) and windows are here, too. The contractor said he'll start the roof on Tuesday, but it's supposed to rain -- seems it always gets yucky on Halloween around here -- so it may be Wednesday, but our house should be under roof by the end of the work week! 
I decided against a new, metal front door and am looking for the door I want. I know what I want but haven't found it yet. I did find an old wooden door with three horizontal panes of glass in very good shape (just needs to be stripped and repainted) for $35, so I bought it and we'll use it until I find the door of my dreams. So, if you have a 36" wide wooden exterior door with either three vertical panes of glass or a large piece of glass with the wooden divider things (can't think of the name right off), send it my way!

Hello Patti,
We used a bunch of old doors, windows, hardware and other things for our new house. We did find most of them at builders resale shop in the big city area. I'm not sure if they would have any shops like that by you but it's a good way to find old doors, windows and other construction things to reuse in your home. Try searching the internet for your area. We did need to drive a bit but my hubby and I took an adventure day and had a great time. Take a big vehicle to haul your finds home in. Also look at old windows they make great doors for display area's and cabinets.
Enjoy the building process like kids it has it's ups and downs and goes way to fast but the end result is worth it.
Pray for our troops to come home safe and soon.

Oh Patti! What an exciting time for you! I LOVE that you are choosing to use old elements in new construction. I'm curious, what does your contractor think? Ours thought some of our ideas were pretty crazy! Best of luck to you and hope the rain holds off for a few extra days!

Hi Patti,
You must be so happy with the progress on the house!!! So glad the roof is going on and things are getting done before winter. Although, I'm sure winter in MO is nothing like winter in Idaho!! Was 14 degrees last night and felt sorry for all the little trick-or-treaters!. Congrats.

Hey Patti! Great news that things are progressing well for you - I haven't been in much lately but seeing as you are building and I am rebuilding, it's fun to see how someone else is progressing!
I LOVE using old elements. Our home was built during the Depression, so it has pretty well needed rebuilding. BUT - I am reusing the old French pane windows that were still there on one side of the house (we replaced all the windows with low-E). Our ceilings will be 12' tall, and with our woodstove, I thought we should make transoms out of those old windows (paint them really cool) and help that warm air circulate through the house. The smaller old kitchen windows will work best for this, and then the larger, nearly square per section ones I am going to paint and use as architechtural elements on the plant shelves.
I have a friend in Wisconsin who loves old doors - she collects them, and one day wants a room made OF those old doors. Wouldn't that be fabulous? |

Sorry it's been awhile, but things have been really hectic. The trusses went on last week & then we lost 4 days due to rain at the end of last week and Mon & Tues of this week. As of lunch break today, all the decking and felt are on the roof and the shingles were to be delivered around 1:00.
I was hoping the roof would be on & doors/windows in by Friday, but that doesn't look likely. I'm figuring the shingles will be on when they stop for the weekend, but the doors & windows won't happen until next week. We're probably going to start sleeping in the basement at that point.
Deer season (gun) starts Saturday here, so dh is off work all next week (always takes that week off). I told him not to worry about working on the house, but I know he feels torn between the two. He loves to hunt, but he also knows how badly my daughter & I want to be in the house!
On the daughter front, she had an asthma "issue" (not an attack but she was in distress) at school yesterday. When I took her to the doctor, he put her on a 5-day supply of Prednisone and said she needs to not sleep in the camper anymore until the weather warms up. So now she will be spending the nights at my in-laws until we can move into the house. We had/have a heater on in the camper, but of course the camper isn't air-tight and it's been fairly damp with the recent rain, so he thinks that was a huge contributor. So the sooner we're in the house, even just the basement, the better off she'll be, too.

Patti, I hope your daughter does well from now on... and that the shingles DID arrive. I am admiring your grace shown to your husband who wants to deer hunt! I have to wonder if I'd be able to show such patience. In any case I know we all hope your progress goes more smoothly and that your family continues to stay up-beat!
