I was a child in the seventies, and loved picking out my "boxed" costume. My favorite was Wonder Woman and Bride of Frankenstein. Such fun!

I do not remember mine, but remember a Halloween parade where a guy came dressed as a mummy. His mom had ripped I don't know how many sheet strips to completely wrap him up. It was cool and creepy. He looked the part totally. Probably the most realistic and coolest costume I have ever seen. |

That would be all of the costumes my mother made, then passed to my kids to wear. Some are falling apart, but she did some sewing back in the day. She made a prairie girl, a skeleton, witches, clowns, and an Indian costume.
My son won the best costume award, when he wore the clown costume to school. Our school does not participate in Halloween anymore. They stopped allowing kids to dress up during school.
I once wore the Indian costume for a history assignment in junior high school. We dressed up in our character and had oral reports. I was Pocahontas.
Over the years, I made my own kids costumes. One year, I made my son a Lego Block (won the school award again). And one year I made my daughter a shake with bubbles and a straw. I used a laundry basket, wrapped it with a table cover, the bubbles were balloons and the straw was a mailer tube wrapped withe red ribbon. She won the award one year too.

I don't remember any of my favorite costumes but I do remember when my soon to be 30 yr old daughter was about four and had a serious speech impediment. I asked her who she wanted to be for Halloween. She replied "dickey finga", I asked her to repreat it about ten times, still could not understand what she meant. Next day we went to Wallyworld where I took her to the costumes and said "show Mommy what you want". She walked right over to the Freddy Kruger outfit and said "see Mommy, dickey finga". To this day I still remind her of "sticky fingers". I believe she was a witch that year. I still don't know how she even knew who he was. We never watched movies like that at home, heck I still can't watch that stuff. |

ok, first, Connie - great comic! I love all of the pictures and memories of Halloween! One of my old-time favorite costumes from the 60's-70's was when I was Quick Draw McGraw. It was a big, cardboard headpiece and it kept falling off. Also, the year I had a "Holly-Hobbie" type bonnet, and my mom made long braids out of yarn and attached them. One good thing about the city, lots of candy in just a few blocks! YUM! |
