Well, we've had extended family members join the marines, my own Dad and Uncle were in the military, and now one of my own kids.
I got the call yesterday.
My 19 year-old daughter joined the Army National Guard. She heads to NC next May, but will start earning her paycheck as soon as they start their drills. She told me she will be working with helicopters.
Her decision was backed up by the fact they will pay for her college too.
Please say a prayer for her.

This sounds like a very solid decision on your daughter's part! She will get good training, an income, healthcare, opportunity to see new places and meet new people. At her age, she will join many others who are choosing to serve their country and get a better future for themselves. I think she deserves a big congratulations and I wish her the best!!

Kristina- I bet your daughter has been encouraging her brother to look into the possibilities too. Good for them both! Military service is a great opportunity in so many ways as well as a good way to grow up and become responsible. It gives young men and women structure and a chance to be part of a community that is committed to doing good things together. Given that they both have struggled with finding employment and funding to go to school, the service can be one way to get both while serving their country. I have known many friends whose kids chose military service and have loved it! It gives them so much and they feel a big sense of pride in their uniforms and their work.
Keep us posted and I hope your son finds his niche and a future he can look forward to with great excitement!

Kristina!
Congratulations! Clearly, you have raised a daughter who knows no gender limitations, the frugality to not be inundated with student loans and (regardless how you feel about the current administration ;) pride in her country!
Remember, great kids don't happen by accident!

I think this will be wonderful for her, Kristina... I'm sure you are very proud of her! But as a Mom, it sure does pull on our heart strings, doesn't it? I'll keep both of you in my prayers, for sure, dear sister! Hugs - Nini

Kristine,
I understand the panic that hits when you 1st get the call. It happened to me a few weeks ago. I had to leave the office to get a grip on myself. My son is going into the Army this Nov. It's a wonderful desicion for him and will take him were he wants to go with his life. But yeah, I understand the shock of it. Just focus on the positive and be your childs biggest cheerleader, it will make all the difference!
Blessings

It is a bit of a double-edged sword, isn't it? You are proud and scared to death at the same time. I'll keep you in my thoughts. Enjoy the pride part! Marianne |

My aunt is going through this as well. It's a completely different emotion when it's your babies going in. But I think it's really good that your daughter knows what she wants and has the courage to go for it! She must have had an amazing example! ;)

My nephew is serving in Afghanistan in the Air Force right now and my cousin's son is in boot camp right now in the Marines. I pray for their safety but am also very proud! I pray the same for everyone else's loved ones. |

Saying a prayer for your family. Sounds like you have raised special children. I'm thankful for people who are selfless and want to protect the rest of us. Please thank them for me.
