Looking for info on air purifiers. We have an older home with an old, wet cellar. I have trouble every winter with allergies to mold. I am looking for info on websites for air purifiers, any info on research about the best kind and any info you might have if you use one and like it. Thank you for helping me out.
Hello! Check out Ecoquest products. A co-worker sells their products and they meet or exceed the highest standards for air quality- a leader in the industry, as I understand it. They have reps throughout the country, and you can probably find a local one through their website.
Clare, You should read what consumer reports says about air purifiers before you buy. Basically most are a scam unless you go through a company that actually sells for medical reasons. I would ask your doctor or allergist, they might know of a reputable company. The ones at Sharper image that are heavily advertized and affordable are not what they seem. The ones that actually work cost in upwards of $400 or more so if are finding them cheaper than that watch out.
My parents use a Oreck air purifier and loves it. You don't have to buy filters instead they have a reusable filter that you just rinse out and it leaves the sir smelling clean.
I agree with Marianne: be careful about the "air purifiers" sold as part of pyramid marketing schemes. They are basically just ozone generators (which is why they make the air smell like after a thunderstorm) and can be very unhealthy for you.
Ultimately, you might want to get at the cause of the dampness in your cellar and see if it would be possible to improve that. I remember my parents dug a French drain alongside our house to direct rainwater away from the foundation. That alone solved most of our wet cellar problem, and it wasn't super-expensive.
