I had an old brown suede shirt that I though about re-decorating with fabric, lace, hankies & old crocheted doilies then I say a weird green stain that would not come out. I thought about giving the shirt to a thrift store when I saw the pretty brown buttons so, I cut the buttons and put then with my other buttons from my Mother & Grandmother.
They are like my treasure gems.

Janice~ I have always saved buttons and after my Mom passed a year ago I acquired all of the ones she had from my grandmother's button box and also her own. Plus, I was lucky enough to get the box too!

Love buttons! I enjoy adding them to greeting cards to make them look even more special.
I have an old chenille sweater and the buttons were missing and broken. I searched through
my button jar and added mismatched ones! Too fun!
I just made a button bracelet. Very easy- if you're interested I can give you the web address
for directions.
Also, you can get a button badge!

I have the buttons my grandmother saved. My sister and I played with these buttons as children. I also received the containers in which she stored them. I always take bottons off ruined clothing and save them. I have purchased many interesting buttons of my own to add to the collection.

Jenny - I'd love to try making a button bracelet - could you please post the location to find the directions? I also have my grandma's button bag and many other buttons I've collected and saved over the years!

I save buttons, too! BUT, I do so probably for a less practical reason. When I was a little girl, my Grandma had a big fancy cookie tin full of the most wonderful buttons - to me they were like treasure! She would open it up and say, "Buttons, buttons... Who's got the buttons?" And we'd giggle. She would let me look through them for hours if I wanted - there were so many different, shapes, sizes and designs...and they were made up of everything from metal to bone to plastic. That box was magical to me. I would imagine all the fancy people who wore these fancy buttons on their fancy clothes, and dream up stories of their lives - how they looked, what they did, where they would go, who they would meet, what they would see... and would they fall in love? That button tin was like a never-ending story book full of marvelous characters and adventures for me; much better than any illustrated story book ever written. So now I, too, keep a big old mason jar full of buttons on a shelf in Grandma's honor. And when little kids are visiting and start to get fidgety, I pull out my button jar in which they, too, can revel and dream. We make up tales about the interesting people who wore the buttons, just like I did as a child all those years ago. There is nothing like the feeling of seeing their own story-sparkle of imagination lighting in their little eyes.... then the adventures begin! :)

I have buttons from my grandmother too, I love going through them and my children played with them too.
There is nothing more special I think. Odd as they are to bring so much pleasure and memories to someone.
And so much history too.

| I love buttons. I think they are so cool. I especially like brightly colored buttons. If a piece of clothing is very dear to me, and gets ruined, I've been known to remove the buttons so to keep a part of it with me. I like buttons that are shaped, too, or more than one color. They are a lot like beads to me. I like clothes that have several different buttons on them. I think it is cool when people do that. |
