I am itching to start decorating for Fall. It is my favorite season and I guess I want it to come soon :)

I can so relate to this passion! Sometimes I have started bringing stuff out as early as September 1 or Labor Day Weekend . Down here in hot, and humid Florida, if I waited for real fall weather it might be Christmas!! No kidding. Some falls are very, very warm. So, a girl has gotta do what a girl's gotta do!! This year we will not be getting home from Norway until September 3 so it will most likely take me a week or so to get back into the groove and then all bets are off! Long time ago, I declared that August is apple season because there truly are early varieties of apples that ripen in August. (we cannot grow apples down here). I have 3 mugs all made in the USA that are handpainted with apples and apple trees. So, I bring out all of my apple decorations(which are not that many) and start the official pre-fall decorating and celebrating with Apple Season! Real 2013 apples usually hit the Florida stores from places like Michigan in mid September and I always visit my daughter in Asheville, NC in October for apple picking and fall leaf peeping! This year, I am hoping to make more apple butter which I just love on sweet potatoes, pancakes, toast etc.
So, what are you thinking will be a Fall decorating start date? Depending on your altitude, I bet nights are already starting to cool down some out in CO.

Girls,
I have been bitten by the "Fall Bug"...going through my Fall stuff and already put one thing out yesterday. I love the cooler weather even though it's a toss up which I like best Spring or Fall. I have so many sweet little things that I use every year and love to add to them. Winnie, the leaves are beautiful in the Fall season. Gatlinburg TN(Great Smoky Mountains)is breathtaking during the Fall. Cades Cove TN is every country girls dream to see and visit in the Fall. It is back in the middle of nowhere. There is lots of wildlife and the leaves are gorgeous!

Me, too! I actually was out with my hubby and bought a beautiful autumnal welcome sign this weekend. I also went crazy last week and splurged on some clothes and other fall stuff. This summer has been so weird, and last week just felt so much like fall that I was having that same dang itch. It didn't help much that some of the garden started dying back - I think it's confused by this weather, too! :) I actually think it's okay to use fall colors all year, but the real decorating comes as soon as school starts. The last thing I want is for my son to be dreaming of summer while trying to concentrate on his lessons! I'm totally with you, Sharon! I say, "Bring on the fall, y'all!"

Winnie, I bet Norway is going to be just beautiful. I have never traveled oversees. Your apple picking plans with your daughter sound like fun. Apple Butter on Sweet Potatoes? Wow, I have got to try that!
Judy, Some day I would love to visit the Smoky Mountains. The Rockies are beautiful but the Smoky Mountains seem so much more tranquil from photos I have seen.
Nini, You go girl! Our weather has been confusing too. In April we had a week of 90 degrees and then back to cold weather. It seems like the seasons are off kilter.
I don't blame you for decorating when school starts. When my husband was doing landscaping I had to restrain myself from decorating too early because that meant his work season was coming to an end, but now...look out :)

Whoop!! Nothing like finding Farmgirls that love what you love!! Sharon, my husband and I took a visit to the Great Smokey National Park in late October about 3 years ago and we had a great time. It was beautiful!! Drove through Gatlinburg TN which was packed with leaf peepers just like us. Judy, I do so understand your perception of the Appalachians vs the Rocky Mts. While the Rockies are tall and rugged, the Appalachians are more rounded, lower, and very blue with certain sunlight conditions ( The Blue Ridge Mts come from this). We just came back from visiting Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons which were amazing and majestic! But, I grew up in Charlottesville, VA, which is at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mts, and they will always be home to me. Especially in the Fall!!
Hahaha, Nini, talking about that dang itch for Fall!! I love it@! And yes, once school starts, it is time to retire Summer which has, in my opinion, ahem, already worn out it's welcome. When I was little, we always started school the day after Labor Day. That was also the sign that no more white clothing, white shoes or hats should be worn. It was officially time to switch to plaids and darker colors. Often by the end of September, it was sweater weather in the morning on the way to school too. So, I associate starting school with different clothing colors, sweaters, and cooler nights. Down here in Gainesville, Fl, teachers went back yesterday for a week of pre-planning and students start next Monday. Of course here, it will be in the 90s for at least another month or more. Flip flops and shorts reign!
The current temps listed in Norway are for the mid 60s in the day and 50s at night. That will really feel like Fall to me! I am looking forward to a respite from the long hot, humid months we always have down here.
Do any of you go nuts over apple season like me?? If so, what do you like to make with apples from your areas? If you go to Mary Jane's RaisinJane blog today, you can see the apple goodie box I sent out to her for fun. You just have to share the passion, right Farmgirls??

My glass leaf and pumpkin collection comes out September 1. Like everyone else, I love autumn and decorating is my way of celebrating the season!

It has been cool the last few days here in PA, down to 48 tonight and it was only 66 today. I live on a mountain that is always about 5- 7 degrees cooler then my friends "down off the mountain" I put off decorating as long as I could, trying to at least wait until August this year. Well the outside of the house anyways. the inside I started on. my daughters are helping to pull out my fall items. My husband just smiles. I leave the pumpkins in the attic for a couple of more weeks. And try to keep from decorating the outside until the first of September. I reminded the farmer that I need some corn stalks to decorate with, (afraid he might cut them all down, even though I have gotten them for the past 12 years.) My hubby just shakes his head.
I agree with Nini that even the garden is saying it time for fall!. As well as the locust trees that have turned brown, and the maple tree in the back yard is looking less green. Nice to meet a group of ladies that do not think I am a little off by looking forward to pulling out the fall décor. I use to wait until school started but I have not been able to hold out the past 4 years. I did make some maple vanilla bean applesauce today, vanilla peach jam, and maple pecan apple baked oatmeal. sure made the house smell like fall, tastes like it to.
Enjoying the beauty of the season, when each leaf becomes a painted masterpiece.
Ah fall.

It sounds like Norway will be perfect! I could so live with temps like that all year round. I checked out Raising Jane and saw the sweet care package you sent Mary Jane. Love the hat and the apple cozy. I like to make Apple Pie (of course and have a couple of different recipes), Hot Caramel Apple Cider (my honey and I came up with that recipe years ago and Gooseberry Patch published it), Apple Butter, Oven Roasted Apple Sauce with vanilla and spices.

Sharon! What a wonderful idea! Why don't we just have a virtual Autumn party here online at MJF? We may not be able to go to each other's homes, but we sure can exchange decorating ideas, entertaining tips, crafts, and recipes, with LOTS of pictures and how-to's! What do you think? I think it'd be a lot of fun! I was actually thinking about hosting a virtual Autumn tea online for the farmgirls, where I would decorate, set a fancy table, make all the goodies and share all the pictures and recipes... But I actually like YOUR idea better! We could have one for every season! What do you think??? I'm all for it!!!
Danyel - Where is Robertsdale? I'm so sorry your garden is experiencing the same confusion as mine. I have to say, though, all the cole crops and the beans and lettuce and squash are thriving in this weather! I really need to get out there to plant more spinach, beets and some turnips... WHEN is the question! LOL!
Dawn - I would REALLY love to see a picture of your glass leaves!
Sharon - I'm serious! If you want to do a virtual Autumn Decorating party, I'm game! It's 40 degrees here this morning, and I am SO in the mood to put away summer and pull out all the stops for fall! (It's so chilly, I'm wearing layers - including a sweatshirt! What IS this?! LOL!) Maybe we could even do a little farmgirl scarecrow contest or something! I'd be happy to contribute the prize!!! :)

Whoop!!! Girls I am in on a virtual Autumn celebration here on MJFConnection. The only problem is that I am not getting back from Norway until Sept. 3 and it will take me a week or so to get back oriented to EDT and life where I could get my decorations out. It would be so fun to actually do a progressive Farmgirl dinner but alas, distance has us all separated!! But we could do a photo tour and offer each other a recipe to try specific to the event? Since we cannot actually visit in person for a treat, we could share a recipe online so each person would have a special take away to enjoy. Maybe we could decide on a virtual theme to create? Here are some ideas: apple desserts, chicken pot pie dinner, tailgate recipes (football is feverish here in the South@!), one dish dinners like chili or brunswick stew, and what else??
Nini, I am so jealous you are having 40 degree weather this week!! LOL!! Yesterday it was 95 with a heat index of 100. bleh! No wonder you and Danyel are inspired to get moving forward on the fall decorations. I will be right in there too. Actually, the month of September is the peak of hurricane season in Florida. As a result, there is just so much tropical moisture drifting across the state from the warm Gulf and Atlantic that the weather here is the worst for heat, humidity and tons and tons of rain. It is sort of a damper to getting truly in the mood for fall, but I am good at pretending in the AC!!!!!
Did I mention scarecrows are one of my favorite fall decorations ever!!!!! I have two coffee mugs with cute scarecrows and an apron made by MJF Farmgirl, countrygrace, with scarecrows, plus a few scarecrow decorations. I love the creative whimsy of the scarecrow tradition and it just adds a perk to fall decorations!!
What do you all think we could do for a celebration here? Who is reading this thread with a flannel shirt on and a cup of hot coffee/tea this morning?????

I'm so sorry you're cookin' out there in Norway! The weather here is just SUCH a teaser! I dread the thought that once September is here, we'll be homeschooling in the 90's - but you know that's just the way, right? I'm prepared! At least I'll be able to look at the colors, sights and sounds of autumn if it happens. Let's pray, too, that Florida and the whole coast escapes hurricane season without a mark this year... Everyone has been through so much. It'd be so nice to have smooth sailing into the holidays!!!
I am sitting here in my heavy denim skirt with leggings and my cozy Jeannette Jayhawks sweatshirt (our high school football team); my toes are so cold the dog won't even let my feet snuggle under her this morning, and I have just finished a nice, fresh hot cup of coffee with a pumpkin muffin (which is a no-no with the bp issue, but a girl needs a little splurge every now and then!). I really think I overdid the chocolate chips this time - I just eyed it up and kept pouring them in. The muffin is more like a heavy dessert, to be truthful, and now I'm all sugared and caffeined up! Eghads! I'm satisfied, though... I definitely won't be doing this again for a long while. Tomorrow, it's back to oatmeal, hibiscus tea and everything healthy! :)

All, I love Sharon's idea and Nini sort of got us started in that direction with her Pumpkin muffin recipe posted this week. Tomorrow I leave for Norway and won't be able to do much until September 4th after I return and re-group. But then, I will jump in!! The link about is one from My Tiny Farm series two years ago on Labor Day. Kinda fun and we can use that as a teaser of the fun to come?
Let's get rolling! There is lots to share! And there is a September dishcloth swap and Trick or Treat swap still open for anyone that wants to join. I have been having a blast making stuff for both of those.

Fall is my favorite season, too. The crisp air, wonderful aroma of soup in the crockpot, cozy sweaters. I try to decorate Labor Day weekend. It just seems a good time with the extra day and all. I hope your fall this year is glorious!

I love this question. I just started this week taking out all of my Fall decorations for inside and outside. When it is all done, my home looks like a magazine cover, really, lol. My husband laughs at me when I get the Fall decorating bug in "August".

CJ, candles already? Another girl after my own heart :) I grew up in New England where Yankee Candles originated. I sure miss going to the factory there.
Hey Carol, I too love those things. It's always nice coming inside from the nippy air to smell the aroma of something yummy cooking :)
Hi Joan, I bet it sure is beautiful in NY, are the leaves changing color yet? Our seasons have been off a bit and it already feels like Fall is sooner than later. You will have to post a picture of your 'magazine cover' :)

I hit fall decorations in September. Often drag out the Halloween stuff. I did learn that when the grandkids were living here, decorating for Halloween too early caused them much anguish. They just couldn't wait for the big event. I've learned to ease back--but not much!!! I love fall. Out come the mums, flannel shirts that I love, denim, pumpkin and apple desserts, soups, and those fall colors! It's warm here in the NW, no sign of fall. You can always count on a hot early September but then the night time temps drop and fall begins, morning fog and afternoon sun. I'd love to join in and share recipes, decorating, and quilt ideas. Bring on the cool--oops, I forgot, we get the rain back! And, football is big in this house. Hubby and I are Oregon Ducks living in Husky territory! We still proudly display our yellow and green!

LOL! CJ - I'm STOCKED up on my favorite Yankee Candles! I've been watching the sales and the coupons. When you combine, it's like hitting the jackpot! I had been dying to burn the fall scents, and then that cold weather came! SO cozy!!!
Sharon, I love your ideas for our MJF Autumn Gathering... And I like the idea of doing this for every season, too! AWESOME!!! When do you think we should get started? Winnie - I hope we'll get this rolling soon for your sake, especially! ;)

Hey everyone-- I am in NYC airport hotel because US Airways had so many issues with planes we missed all of our connections including the over seas flight!!! We finally got confirmation today for a flight out tonight so we are missing the first two days of our tour. Anyway........ I went to see my friend in Georgia in early August and she had a coupon for the new Yankee Candles. So I got the medium size new Kitchen Harvest and finished it completely off in 10 days!!! Loved that scent! I still have half of a big Pumpkin Apple scent from last year that I am working on again too . Plus, I ordered a soy candle , Cider Mill, upon recommendation of a friend and have that to burn when I get back. You gotta have those fall candles to set the mood!!
Why don't you and others just decide a date and activity and I will catch up when I get home? That way we don't lose momentum. Several have talked about Labor Day as the starting point so maybe plan on Monday Sept.2 as a kick off . Maybe a virtual stop by for coffee and a muffin/pumpkin bread / breakfast treat and see a few fall decorating ideas?? Those who have Yankee candles can report on the various scents and recommend favorites. People could just take a photo of some areas of the home already decked out. Or maybe share the recipe of whatever you are showing in your virtual photo.
How about that idea? Keeping it simple and we can add on as we move through September and head into October with Halloween . As I am sitting here, I am thinking a show and tell sort of game plan done early gives all readers some ideas to try , recommendations on new products, and a way to celebrate a real kick off of fall!! This way it can become a thread of perpetual fall fun and home Idea's that are sure to happen as we move through the weeks and we are not limited to just one day or event.
What do you all think? I will join in as I am able until I return. Whatever the majority wants to do will be fine with me. It all sounds fun to me!

Winnie- I just saw that you are in NYC! Wish I would have known you were stuck here- I could have come and scooped you up- I am only about 45 mins or so from JFK! UGH.
I am glad to hear that you will be getting out on a flight tonight though. Enjoy Normway! I've visited there along with other parts of Scandanavia and LOVED it!
Sharon- to answer your Fall decorating question- In my book, if its September 1st then I have the green light to decorate for FALL! Its my most FAVORITE season all around, and I especially love that I can decorate in Sept and leave everything up through THANKSGIVING! What other season can you decorate once for and get MONTHS of enjoyment out of? Yet another reason to love FALL!
As for the candle issue- well, FALL scents are my absolute favorite! Pumpkin, maple, autumn leaves, ahhhh. I really like the Yankee candle scent "Be Thankful" too!
Heck, although I am sad that the kids have to head back to school soon, at least I have all of these wonderful FALL things to look forward to!

One of the great things I love about fall is the flavored coffees that come out. I love the spiced coffees labeled Pumpkin Spice. Hubby and I splurged and bought a Keurig. I love the San Francisco Bay company as they packaged their K-cup in a "green" way. They use a material that dissolves unlike the plastic containers most K cups are made of. Today I opened a box of their Pumpkin Spice coffee. It's not bold but lovely spiced. I love it! And, this is the first cool day we've had in quite awhile here in the NW. Played with my fall and Halloween fabric today.Good day.....
