We do.

Ding, ding, ding.

The total is in for this next school season.

$333.99 for three kids.

Sigh...

No, public school is not free anymore. And that doesn't include clothes, field trips, other fees that pop up throughout the year, or supplies not provided.

I used to long ago. Both my sons have graduated many years ago but think the last fee was almost $200 for the last son the year he graduated. Pretty common for public schools I think.

Indeed... High School Jr.
School fees 50.00
parking permit 40.00
Yearbook 50.00
School Pictures 30.00
sport fee 45.00 per sport not including sport gear
my daughter eats cold lunch- so we didn't need to pay for hot lunch which is a large fee

It just seems to go on and on....

I know I have more kids than most do, so it hits us harder, but guess what else they wanted?

We have what's called "first night" here, where everyone in the school comes to pay fees, put stuff in lockers, meet teachers etc. However, for the last two years, they started taking school photos on that night. For me, that would mean putting out another $90-100.00 on the same night.

I'm a bit smarter than that. I don't go.

I pay fees early, avoid the crowd, no need to meet the teachers at their age (most I have met already anyway), and I don't pay for school pictures. I take them myself, and get the exact amount of copies I need. No extras sitting in drawers all over the place. It saves me a ton, and the kids like them better.

Here is Florida, those sorts of fees have risen because the Legislature has defunded public school to the point that they can hardly keep the doors open. When we are faced with this sort of problem, we should be writing our legislators and being firm with them that they need to stop taking money away from our kid's education. After all, most people cannot afford private school which is even more costly. Unfortunately, Florida is not the only state where the Legislature has gutted funding which has resulted in fewer teachers, closed schools, few support staff in schools, no more cross walk guards, fewer bus routes...... the list shamelessly goes on! And without an education, our children cannot get good paying jobs for their futures. This is a national issue within states and most of us forget that we have to hold accountable those legislators and governors that we elected into office!!!

Amen Winnie- we have been hit VERY hard recently with our Gov Scott Walker, and our teachers and school was at the top of his list! Our children take the brunt of this.
