Julie, I know what you mean about women you can relate to. I grew up in the mid west and now live in central NJ, it's not quite the same. I happen to live around a large farming community but most of my "outside" friends just don't understand. This is like "goin' to the cafe every mornin' and catching up on the news"!! Kelly |

Its so nice to here from everyone, and nice to know there are some farmgals nearby! Kathy, my grandparents still live in the Waterloo area, so that's about half way between you and me! Hope everyone enjoys it here! Bonnie started a blog

I just have to say, I've been here for a little over a week and I have enjoyed it so much. Thank you for being so welcoming and for answering questions and being so fun. It is truly wonderful to find a diverse group of women that have such a common thread of "Farmgirlness". Have a blessed day! Bonnie

Hi Bonnie, It's been a while since I read this; but noticed your blog, so I took a look. I also have a "problem" with collecting fabric. I don't know if I could ever use everything I have! I love to sew, but have very little free time. I always have lots of ideas though!! Your quilts are wonderful and I love the apron you finished. And did you say salt & pepper shakers?? I had to stop myself from collecting them. They are sooo cute; but I just don't have a way to display them; so I thought I better stop with the ones I have. Maybe if I get a china cabinet someday, one with glass doors so everything doesn't get dusty. That would be really nice. We went to Corning Glass and few years ago, that is a very cool place. And the pictures of the bass....oh my husband would be jealous! Well, you have a great blog. Keep up the good work. Julie |

Hi Julie, Thank you for all the kind words! We sound like we have alot in common! Some of the fishing pictures are from right here in Western NY and some are from Black Lake which is near the 1000 Islands. I collect moose, so I started out with a pair of moose salt and pepper shakers. Then someone bought me a cabin and pine tree to go with my moose, then grandma gave John Deere ones, and oohhh I just couldn't resist the squirrel and acorn!!!!!I too am waiting for the day I get a china cabinet!!!
Hey to Debbie in Idaho! Thanks for the welcome! You are right, farmgirl is a state of mind. I actually live in the village on a 1/2 acre. Just a silly side note we had a lady from Idaho in at work today to do a food presentation. Have a great day ladies Bonnie

You should come visit in Maine, see live ones. Just not in a car riding down the road...maintain a safe distance. LOL The first one I saw...oh my goodness!!!! I was certainly a wide-eyed city girl!!

Bonnie, Your moose is very cute, when I was in Alaska I saw lots of them, they looked a lot like yours without the hat and scarf. NANCY JO

Hi Everyone, I've been out of town for a week, missed all of you! That moose is cute. I'm pretty sure we don't have any here in Western New York. I have a friend you also collects them. Does anyone here knit? I'm going to start a ribbed scarf today for a Christmas present for my son's girlfriend, can't wait. We have a knitting group that meets at lunchtime. I haven't had a project in a while, so I'm excited.
Hi Beemoosie, I have several salt & pepper shakers, some that I think are pretty old. And we have a variety of John Deere things. That is the tractor we have and my husband really loves his tractor. :) So people are always giving us John Deere stuff. With a new grandson on the way, I may have to get him a John Deere bib or booties or something. I forgot to mention when we were talking about fabric that next to my work is an Interior Decorator's showroom, open only to "the trade", the decorators themselves. They often throw out (what a sin!) their fabric samples. Well, several of us in my office watch for it and snatch it up when they do. I just can't resist it. I thought I'd make some throw pillows. One woman made a wallhanging. Can't let that good fabric go to waste, ha ha.

NanaJulie, Can you believe what people throw away!? I need to keep my eyes open to all the shops around here...see what I can come up with! Nope, never run into a live moose around this part of NY! But my house, and now my yard seem to have a few...or more! Also, go to the stitching room forum and you will find alot of knitters. I took a class and learned to knit a scarf last year, but I don't know how to finish it!!! My sister in law visits ME every summer, she brings me goodies from the Mangy Moose in Freeport Maine. Maybe when the kids are grown we will take the trip with them. Oh Nancy! You keep me laughing! Have a lovely Thanksgiving, gals!

I will definitely check out the stitching room. Besides the scarf (which I did start yesterday, yeah!), I also plan to start a cape for one my granddaughters and curtains for a spare bedroom. I always have lots of plans, but not lots of time; we'll see how far I get. Have a great Thanksgiving everyone! |

Just popping in to say hello and welcome to all, and a special "hey there" to my fellow WNY-ers NanaJulie and Beemoosie! I also live south of Buffalo - it seems like there are quite a few Central and WNY-ers around here now, which is nice. For a long while I felt like one of the only "easterners" on the boards, with so many people posting from the plains and the mid-west. At any rate, I myself am more of a farmgirl in spirit - we don't grow our own food, but do belong to a CSA which happens to be owned and run by friends of ours, so I feel pretty good about that. :-) |

Hello laluna! So nice to hear from another Western New Yorker! Where south of Buffalo do you live? I, too, felt like the only Easterner for a while. It's great to see that more are joining. I guess you really do just need to be a farmgirl at heart. It's really nice talking to other women who feel the same as you. I know this is probably a dumb question, but what is a CSA? Julie |

Hey ladies! Wasn't it a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend? I will take this weather in NY ANY time! I am kind of an ignorant wanna be farm girl, what is CSA? My dad probably knows, he grew up on a farm. Still loves his John Deeres. He is bringing one over to our house now. We keep it in the garage and my husband plows with it all winter. He love that! Have a great day ladies!! Bonnie

Hi Bonnie, I'm glad I'm not the only one who didn't know what CSA was! :) This weather is soooo nice for November. We better enjoy it while we can, right? I had relatives up from Florida for Thanksgiving and they were disappointed that we didn't have any snow. My husband likes plowing with his John Deere better than with the plow on his truck. I think we're ready for any snow - plow on the truck, log splitter on the back of the tractor for counter-weight, garage bays empty, ready for cars to park in there. Now for the Christmas preparations....oh boy! But actually I love Christmas; it's my favorite!! Take care, Julie |

Hi Becky, Yeah, we were waiting for my dad to bring his John Deere M over last night (my daughter thinks M stands for her name Marie, she LOVES that tractor) Dad called and said he was heading over at 3:00. Perfect, we didn't have to leave here until 5:00 to get to my daughter's basketball game. 4:30 comes along, and I'm a little worried, so I call his cell phone. He was at a CAR WASH cleaning the tractor up before he brought it over!!!! Men and their toys....I don't know why my husband thinks I have a quilting problem... Hugs, Bonnie

Hey, did you guys find out what a CSA is? I just checked back in on this thread (I'm a WNY-er too, so I want to see what's up).
In case you didn't find out somewhere else, it stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It's when people sign up and pay one lump sum in the early spring to get fresh vegetables from a farm all year. Usually you have to pick them up at certain times and locations once a week, and sometimes the farm requires that you put in some hours helping them in the fields over the course of the season.
Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving (60 degrees in Rochester this weekend!) |

Thank you, Amie! I had never heard of CSA before, it sounds great. I will have to check out and see if I can find someone who participates around here, it sounds like a good experience for our family. Our Thanksgiving was wonderful! We had the great weather, also. We are about 20 miles South of Rochester. I even did more yardwork Friday! Bonnie

Amie - Thanks, now we know.
Bonnie - That's funny. I should point that out if I get a funny look the next time I bring more fabric home!!
