We just got 12 laying chicks. We also have 35 meat chicks. When I went out tonight one of the laying chicks looks to have a bad leg. I seperated her with food and water. Id there anything else I can do? Or should I put her down right away?

I am going to seperated the layers from the meat this week.

Suggestions welcome. This is my first time with chicks. We have always gotten older birds.

I would give a day or two, and if there is no improvment, then put her down...

I was grabing one of my CC meat chicks a few weeks ago and her leg just snapped and broke. I cried and cried over that. But she is just fine now. I can't tell her from all the others. I used to could, because she hopped on the one good leg. But now she's using both legs. I don't know how, but sometimes they can just heal themselves better than we can.

I am hoping she will recover. I am going to separate the met and layers tonight after work. I think the meat chicks are starting to trample the layers.

I don't know if it is worth the effort of splinting. Hubby thinks I coddle the chickens too much. I just don't want them to suffer.

Kristin, if I cried over a chicken, my hubby would get rid of all of them. So I really need to keep my stress level to myself. But I did not sleep very well last night, worrying about them.

I think the more we worry or stress over these animals, the worse it gets. Most of the time, they'll be ok. I do all I can for mine and if nothing helps, I call a vet. But not for a chicken. I did have a few of the meat chicks that sounded congested so I separated them and gave them electrolytes and a few other things. 1 made it and the other didn't. I really don't do too much and they are usually alright. I just figure there are millions more chickens out there. I hope your is ok soon. And don't worry about them!

This chick you've separated, did you put another chick in with it? I think, unless there is blood, the chick should be alright with the others. They do get lonely.

And the reason I cried over the broken leg is because it was my fault. I grabbed a little too hard and I broke her leg. It was awful and I was responsible.

She didn't make it. I got up this morning and she was gone. Thanks for all the advice.

Kris, I know what you mean. I hate when it is my fault that the animals get hurt. I do try to stay strong in front our little girl. We are trying to teach her that farming has losses when you have animals. Otherwise we would be crying over every lost bug, bird and bunny that wanders into the yard.
