Hello ladies-
May I beg the favor of tapping in to the expertise of those of you who sew? I have a volunteer recognition gift I need to get for a lady who is an experienced and practical seamstress. I describe her as practical because more than once I have heard her say "I know they sell a special little tool for that, but how often would I use it?".
What is a sewing tool you picked up that you thought you wouldn't use too much but ended up uses often?
The first thing in my gift bag to her is "The Purple Thang" - look it up if you aren't familiar with it. If I could come up with something like this, I would be sending you this message from my private mountaintop in Colorado rather than my .33 acre lot in suburban VA! And beyond this cool little tool, I'm not sure what she might use. She constructs and tailors clothes as well as makes quilts.
Thanks in advance for your suggestions- Cindy

Oh my! If you know her favorite Quilt Shop a gift certificate would be nice. That way she could pick something out that she wants. I know I love it when I get that. One can also always use a good seam ripper. The do get dull after a while. Also, if you know what kind of pins she likes. Those are also nice. Maybe refills for her marking pencil. Stuff like that.
Hope this helps
The road to success is not straight. There is a curb called Failure, a loop called Confusion; speed bumps called Friends; red lights called Enemies;caution lights called Family. You will have flats called jobs. But, if you have a spare called Determination; an engine called Perseverance; insurance called Faith, and a driver called Jesus, you will make it to a place called Success!! |

One thing I use all the time is a Stiletto. Received it as a gift and find it so useful. Kathy |

What about something that is a nod to sewing past? Like even a piece of jewelry? I have my Great Great Aunt's sterling silver needle case that hung on a silver chain. It's very high Victorian, very ornately designed and you wouldn't know "what" it was just by looking at it. Open it up and it's ALSO totally functional, which would appeal to her sensibilities :) Here is one very similar that I just found on Etsy. http://www.etsy.com/listing/122769212/etched-sterling-silver-needle-case-etui?ref=sr_gallery_7&ga_search_query=needle+case&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_ship_to=US&ga_search_type=vintage
Etsy (in the vintage section) and Ebay are great resources for this. They are not that expensive, either when I've come across them.

In fact, if you search Vintage Needle cases on Etsy, you'll find the most amazing things (I just did) and I don't think you could go wrong with any of them. The absolute cutest sock darner set I've ever seen--an old wooden mushroom made in England. Adorable!

Ladies,
THANK YOU for all these excellent suggestions! Now I'll have trouble deciding which of so many things to get her when just a little while ago I had no ideas.
I knew this was the right group to ask :)
