according to Dean Karnazes, Sanf Francisco-based ultra-marathoner and author of Ultra-Marathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner" sez: running backward works the lungs more efficiently than running forward, burns more calories and lets bones absorb shock more effectively. Backward running also helps recovery from sprained ankles, pulled hamstrings and other leg and kneww injuries, because it puts less impact on joints. BEST: Start Slowly, until you build confidence ... HA .. i guess my advice is to be aware of what's in 'back' of you .. or have a buddy run face-forward (take turns switching directions) .. to make sure you don't run backwards into something!

I guess you could stand backward on a tread mill and you wouldn't have to worry about hitting any one

have a lovely day and may God bless you and keep you safe

Ha! My mother-in-law evidently heard this advice, she was bored with walking forward so walked backward one morning, promptly she turned her ankle and had to wear a brace for the next six weeks.

I myself prefer a few extra minutes in bed and a long hot shower in the morning to walking or running, no matter which direction!

I used to see a guy in our neighborhood run backwards. He was very muscular and large and he ran better backwards than I will ever run forwards! He must have been very agile.

On my noon walks I always walk forward, but on the return back to my car I walk up a hill backwards for about 20-30 steps. It does relax the muscles in my calf. I didn't realize the other health benefits, so... good! Walking sideways, as in doing a grapevine step in dancing is good for your body too, at least for 10 or so steps. Hard to keep that one up!

My mom had knee surgery a few weeks ago, and I took her to the first few sessions of PT. The first day, there was a man running backwards on a treadmill. He sort of had the look on his face of someone who was running from something very scary, and could not get far enough away. I went home and tried it ( on 1 mile an hour ) and did OK just walking. The running part was not so good-so I will leave that to those who have more courage, and balance, than I do.

I enjoy going for a brisk walk, but I can't run anymore..arthritis in my knees and feet...BUT, if I were to run, backwards or forewards, it will be in the Great-Out-Of-Doors, and NOT on a treadmill...it just makes me feel too much like a rat on a wheel.
If I can't enjoy nature while I exercise, then I don't really love doing it...

Jeannie, What a kind thing to say! Actually, I'm sure the other people that cross my path on the trail are thinking "Is she looney-tunes?"

I've recently started using two Swiss hiking poles, like walking sticks. They are retractable, height adjustable, have a point on the tip (to use in inclement weather), or are rubber covered other times, with ergonomic handles. I really enjoy using them! I did some reading about the health benefits they provide to a good walk as they engage your upper body, namely your arms and shoulders and upper back to provide more motion. You extend your arms alternately as if you were shaking hands with someone and place the pole ahead of you. Really fun to use.

And if you thought walking backwards turns heads... let me tell you, these get some looks, too! I've been using them for about three weeks now, and the only comments I've gotten are from MEN, who always have some variation of remark like "where's the snow?", "where's your skis?", etc... Last Thursday two of my neighbor husbands whizzed by on their bikes and made just those comments, except one added my name!

Guess I'm good for a laugh a minute!.... but I'll have the last laugh, won't I, as my health gets better and better?!!

I used to walk backwards on the treadmill several years ago, it was a real trick to switch directions while the belt is still moving. The first couple of times I felt like an idiot, but it got better. Just start slowly. I do still walk backwards for a little bit when I am out with the dog - when I know there is a clear path behind me! It helps unwind the leash from around my legs, too.
