and this from: Harvey Sachs, PhD, director of buildings programs, American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. Washington, D.C. www.aceee.org:

"Front-loading washers use less water than top loaders and are gentler on clothes and quieter .. but they cost twice as much.

Dryers with moisture sensors cost about eh same as other dryers, but they save only about 10 cents per load .. that can still add up to $450 over the dryer's life.

(ahhhhh .. then there is that outdoor CLOTHES LINE and SUNSHINE!!!)

But then, i guess we could use a 'washboard' and elbow power too to wash our laundry!

Refrigerators with top-mounted freeezers cost less than side-by-side models and cut energy costs by 13%, but the freezer area is smaller.

AGAIN .. not a recommendation .. just some info i read to pass on. Bears checking out other sources too maybe!

You know Frannie, years ago we bought the state of the art energy saving refrigerator. It was an Amana, and it was chocolate brown (that'll tell you how old it was!). My hubby kept harping that we should buy a new one; he said the energy savings would be substantial. I had a hard time believing him until we finally did it; we got one with the Energy Star rating, and my electric bill is consistently $20 a month less than it was before.

I should look at my washer and dryer....

Great tips, Frannie!
