I thought Angie had a great idea of starting a separate topic for our book. What do you think? We can post all our comments and questions on this post so it doesn't get lost.

TGIF!! Hi everyone. How is the reading coming along? Hope you all are still enjoying our book. Are we still okay with 10 chapters a week?

My problem is not rushing through the entire book! I'm loving it :-) Up to chapter 17, so lets start the ball rolling with inputs, questions and character analysis!

Hello everyone! Sorry for the delay in posting, I've been reading!! And yup, I finished. Couldn't help myself.
I found some discussion questions for our book and will begin. There are 9 questions in all, so plenty to keep us chatting for a week or two. None of the questions are "plot spoilers" so don't be afraid to read on.

1)
Ireland is itself a character in the novel, noted throughout the book for the beauty of its landscape and for the intensity of emotion in its history and people. Liam captures this perfectly when he quotes the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow: 'By suffering worn and weary, but beautiful as some fair angel yet'.
Which characters best embody this quotation?
Think of the multiple ways in which beauty can manifest itself.

Please share your thoughts.

I see that quotation in several of the characters. In Timothy, after years alone, helping others, he has a warmth and kindness that draw people to him and still always seems to keep positive. It makes me smile to see his relationship with Cynthia as such a gift to them both.

I've noticed that Timothy seems more insecure in his role as clergy, not as sure as he is in Mitford. Perhaps its because he's on vacation. Unfortunately, no matter where you are, your calling goes with you.

Hello girls, sorry for being absent for a couple of days. "life"

Hm, I'm reading again the questions posed.

'By suffering worn and weary, but beautiful as some fair angel yet'.
Which characters best embody this quotation?

Oddly enough the person who comes to mind for me is Evelyn Conor. I think she had absolutely worn herself down physically, mentally and spiritually her whole life and yet there was a beautiful strength of character and resolve in here.

and beauty manifests in so many ways don't you think. Not just the obvious visual, but in caring, giving, loving, forgiving. Are not these all beautiful too?

Tracy, hope you recovering well and enjoying some reading time.

Here's our question for today.

Karon has filled the novel with excerpts of poetry and prose; these quotations are included not only for their beauty but for the way they capture the meaning of the scenes that contain them. Locate the quotation that you found most affecting; explain why it moved you, and why it was integral to the passage in which it appears.

Weird, I typed out a mini review and it never posted. Geesh, I've got medicated brains and can't remember everything I wrote. I'll have to come back to it once I remember what I wrote!

'By suffering worn and weary, but beautiful as some fair angel yet'.

You know, I can't help but think of Cynthia in reference to this quote. I mean, she's in Ireland and she's confined to a couple of rooms and everyone's problems. And yet, she does not wallow in self pity. She turned ashes for beauty. She saw this as her reason for being there and it was her gentle spirit that not only helped the family but Tim also. She helped him put his visit into perspective and in doing so, they saved a lost soul. Cynthia may not be from Ireland but she embodies this quote. To spend your vacation with a busted ankle and little entertainment and yet she made me envious of what she was able to do. Angelic spirit, that's Cynthia!
