Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to deter rodents in the garden? I have a beautiful garden at my school (I teach students with severe disabilities) and they are getting in our raised beds. They've decimated a lot and are now working on our tomatoes.

I've tried blood meal, cayenne, and even building a fence. They can get over and through the tiniest of holes.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

predator urine works the best, also cat and dog hair, dryed HOT peppers seeped in hot water then sprayed onto plants...

Thank you for who you have chosen to teach, I have a autistic and blind grandson, and his teachers are angeles with invisable wings, as I'm sure you are too...

Tina, thanks for the quick response. We've tried Shake Away as a repellent and it didn't work. Have you had success with a different predator urine brand? Cayenne pepper also didn't work, but I'll try again. Maybe I just didn't use enough.

I've got tons of dog and cat hair all over my house! I'll save some up and put it around the garden at school.

Thank YOU for the thank you. I love my students. They are the most amazing kids in the world. I'm the lucky one who gets to hang with them every day. :)

fox or bobcat would probally do the trick..., and cayenne is not hot enough, you want red hot chili peppers, the hotest you can find, mexican grocery store, already dried...

We have used red Tobasco sauce to deter squirrels from chewing on cedar siding at my parent's house with good success. I also use it in my garden to keep rabbits and squirrels out. You can dilute the pepper sauce with with a little bit of water to make a spray. I wonder if that might work? If you don't want to spray it directly on the plants and raised beds syou can spray a solid 12-24 inch or wider stripe around the entire border of the garden so the critters have to step in it to get into the garden. If there is a fence with posts you can spray it on those too to keep the squirrels off. Once they get the pepper on themselves a time or two they learn to stay away. Good luck!

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

What kind of rodents are we talking about here? That makes a difference in how to mount an effective defense.

Good question Mara. I should have been more specific. We are talking rats and/or mice. I've seen both on campus.
