Garden Gate:  What's wrong with this Hosta?  |

I have some hostas and this is how they are growing this year. Last year one looked like this and now this year all of them look like this. They are all growing in the same area in a circle. I think they are sick, but not sure. My husband thinks that the plastic that the previous owner laid over the area I think to keep the weeds down is doing it to them, but I don't know.
Help!!!

Judy,
I am a hosta "collector" and have never seen this in all my years of gardening them. What I would try is to take your photo to your local county extension center. They have master gardeners "on call" that can hopefully answer this. I am so curious. Hope you will update us when you find your answer, I'd love to know.

hard to tell in the photo ... but are they in the sun? And what is the tiny rocks? looks like some sort of drainage rock ... How long have they been there in that spot?

I've had a lifetime of growing hostas and have never seen anything like this before. You can go to the Chicago Botanical Garden, Your Garden, Gardening help thread and ask them if they know what is going on.
I hope you find out soon what the problem is. Please let us know the solution!

Judy,
I am unsure what is going on. My niece gave me some of hers a few years ago. All were the same size when transplanted. Every year after that one bunch thrives while the other bunch remains smaller. I have no clue why they grow like this. Both bunches of mine are huge compared to yours. As the other girls have said...I think the best thing to do would be to get an opinion from a professional.
Hope you find out what's going on with them...cos when they grow they are beautiful.

You might have a virus called Hosta Virus X. I would call your local extension or send them a pic. I believe there is a test they can perform. Good luck!

I started out with two. One of them has gotten huge and the other one died I guess because it no longer came back. I have never seen one come up the way yours is. How many are planted there. It looks like maybe more than one.
I hope you find out what is going on with it.

It looks to me like your hosta just needs to be divided and replanted. Many perennials will do this if left alone for several years. The original roots/tubers die off in the center while the newer growth spreads away from the center as it grows. Good luck!

I put a call into our Farm chapter and am waiting for a call back. Thanks Marilyn, I think maybe that is what is happening. The leaves are all fine it's just that the center seems to have died off.
