Venting here, I was in our local Walmart (could have been Target, Sears or the Bay for that matter) and yet again another year of shorty shorts for little girls. My daughters are 6 and 3 years old, a clothing option should not be butt skimming shorty shorts, who are the buyers for these stores? Don't these people have young daughters. They seem to be able to find mid-thigh designs for little boys, why not little girls.
I was able to find a couple of mid-thigh pairs for the girls but there weren't many left.
Will be making more age appropriate shorts myself again this year.

I do dislike all the shorts that have been sold over the past few years. I have two girls (9-12) and do not allow those items worn. We stick more to Capri pants here. We are much more modest. If you sew you could add some really cute ruffles to lengthen them a bit. Good luck

I find most of the thigh length shorts and lots of capris at the thrift shops. It is sad how the designs for the little ones look like something a 20 yr. old would wear.

My DH would absolutely NOT approve, and me either. But, my husband would never let our children in shorty shorts.
My MIL buys a lot of our girls clothing (she never had daughters! lol) And she finds the mid thigh ones (actually they go to their knees) from lands end and children's place most.

I think capris are more comfy anyway compared to those short shorts. Violet wears toddler sizes, still, but we have picked more play dresses and skirts with the built in shorts this year because I can't seem to find much that is age appropriate unless I want to pay Gymboree prices. kohls had some cute items for girls-Osh Kosh has a great vintage line at Target and a very feminine, age appropriate line at Kohls.

yeah it seems when the main stores for children's wear goes shorty short (they did this a few years ago too) the department stores have more conservative choices. Penny's Clerance is sometimes pretty good too-both for the knee shorts, and the skirt/short combo. We do a lot of those too!

I do have to say, when I was at my son's middle school last week, many of the girls were wearing very pretty sun-dresses. They looked very cute and respectable. I was very impressed how the girls looked like girls. So the stores might be trying to sell the shorty shorts, but I think many of the parents are not allowing that kind of dress.
Wait....you'll see many of these clothes on the clearance racks at the end of season...

Oh I hear ya. It's awful. We were at lunch yesterday at a restaurant and at the table next door was a mom, grandma and seven year old and the grandma bought shorts at Justice and was pulling them out. The adults were complaining about how short they were but were saying that's all there were. We are having a horrible time finding shorts for my dh this year, too. She has two bermuda shorts leftover from last year but they are about to be too tight because she's grown. Right now the only thing I found that was appropriate was one skort. I see girls with their undies and butt cheeks peeking out, and they can't be more than 11 or 12. Will not happen in my house! I am having a hard time finding shorts too. Don't want daisy dukes at my age! (Or ever). Eeeeeeek!

I found some nice capris for my granddaughter at Once Upon a Child if you have any of those near you. Very nice and she really likes them. Also found cute sundresses there for her. I like the ones with the shorts sewn in for my toddler granddaughter as s they are a nice cover up and easy to make a quick diaper change.

I just found three pairs of decent shorts at Walmart last night for my dd. thought of this post. Got her a khaki, a denim, and a turquoise twill. But it was three pairs in a sea of itty bitty short shorts! And it was after going to Target, Kohls, justice, and Gap!

Go to the boys department and find the tartan type shorts (large checked /plaid) and pair with white tee shirt or matching tee. At the age of 2-4 or even 5 does it really matter. I know all girls want pink. Also.take last winter's jeans and make cut offs or better yet hem them for a more finished look.

Right now is the best time to find leggings and what for little girls on the cheap. I purchase them and then hem them to a long short length, granted they are tight but at least my DD is covered.
I agree that the stores have been selling odd clothing, Target over the winter seemed to think little girls wanted cut up t-shirts and short skirts.

I've been steaming about this for years, actually.
There's no infant 9mo in the world that needs Daisy Dukes, just, no.
I tend to buy consignment, so there's all manner of years of styles for the picking. That said, my 5yo daughter usually ends up wearing skirts, dresses with bicycle shorts underneath, or capris.

Yes, I agree! No young child of mine needs Daisy Dukes! Kids are kids for such a short time it just seems clothing stores want our kids to grow up faster ready or not. A friend of mine used a term I hope none will be offended but I do feel it sums up a lot of what I've found new in stores. She calls it "prostitot" clothing. I found that to be true when I went to buy swimsuits for my girls. I was made nauseaous when I saw what the bikinis looked like for my 24month old sized daughter! Shameful. Anyway I did dig hard enough to find a 24 month one piece, it even had a cute little tutu on it. Lucky for me they had 2 left to choose from! The bikini side was full so that gives me indication no one was buying them!!!
Anyway I find my clothes at thrift stores, clearance racks, or given to me by hand-me-downs. We were given some almost new GAP clothes but the skirts were kid mini skirts and when my oldest daughter asked if she could have it I just told her it was inappropriate so we will find another way to use the material. Interesting that I'm not the only one that has noticed the minimal children clothes too!

Krystle. We cloth diaper, and when my DD1 was ready to go swimming, just so happened Target was selling cloth swim diapers! They had girl and boy ones. The they were two pieces but NOT bikinis. The boys were a knee shorts with a tee shirt-swim material. And the girls were skorts, with tee shirts (swim fabric). The tee shirts had short sleeves but sleeves none the less. My DH and MIL fell in love with them and my MIL now only buys this style for my kids even now that they are potty trained. I believe she gets them from Land's End. Any way I was shocked when one of my Girl Friends asked in a accusing way if we were weird modesty people! Um.....no just regular modesty people! lol I'm find with one pieces and a little shoulder showing. BUT, we kind of like the tee shirt/skort not only because of modesty but I told her we thought there was more sun protection as well!
