Hello everyone. I just signed up last week. I live in a neighborhood in rural Southern Maryland. I grew up on the Potomac/Wicomico Rivers and am the daughter of a Waterman/Carpenter. I am the modern generation of generations of waterman and farmers. We called where I grew up, the end of the road. It literally was. The road ran right into the Potomac River, literally. I was raised to fish, oyster, crab, hunt and live off the land as much as we could. We ate what we caught or killed. We raised rabbits, chickens, ducks, geese, and goats. My sister even tried her hand at a pig once. We grew as much of our food as possible, my sister and I even had our own little plots to grow what we like to eat. I was taught how to can our food for the winter and freeze our food. I moved when I graduated to get out of the "boondocks" and spread my wings. I moved to Western Md, up near the mountains. I moved to a little "city", had a townhouse in a neighborhood, and couldn't do the things I grew up doing. It was ok, but after a while, and as I matured, missed my old life. After being away for 14 years, and some unforeseen circumstances, I found myself, moving back to the county I grew up in. I do not live in the same little spot I lived in all those years ago, but it is still rural. I little town, not much around, but close to the big towns. It's a nice place to raise kids, but I still miss where I really grew up. I still garden, but I only have a small one. The bigger garden is at my parents house. What we can't grow, we go to the local Amish community and get our supplies from them. We buy in bulk and can our food for the coming winter. I raise my own chickens and they all have names. I believe in going green and make a lot of my own products. I can sew and crochet. I know how to do basic carpentry and I love diy projects. I am so excited to join the sisterhood and learn so much more. To communicate with other farm girls that like to do the things that I do.

Hi Terri,
Welcome!!! I think you will really enjoy the Farmgirls.
They are the best.
I lived in Southern Maryland about 10 years ago.
It is different there and I loved it. We camped many times
where the Potomac and Chesapeake met. It's beautiful country.

Welcome Terri,
What a fascinating life you have led so far. I hope you enjoy your time here. I would love to hear the names of all your chickens. :) I have been wanting chickens for quite some time, but haven't gotten the husband to agree yet. I have a list of names for my someday chickens posted on the front our refrigerator, but they are not here yet. Silly, I know,,, but I am hoping it helps him decide it's okay. We live in a small town in Colorado and backyard chickens are okay, just not roosters. I have only had cats, dogs, birds and fish in my life and have been around horses some. My brother, who is still in Texas, has chickens, too, so I get to hear all about his.

Thanks everyone. I know that I have made the right decision to join already. Everyone is so welcoming and kind.
Jo, I have 8 hens. No roosters. Don't want to upset the neighbors. They love the hens though. My sister has roosters and hens and I get my chicks or eggs from her when I want them or need them. I have a mix of different breeds. I have 2 Bantams that I started with. I named them Molly and Sweetpea. I then let them set on eggs and got 6 more hens. (I had more, but they turned out to be roosters and I gave them back to my sister.) I have 1 Silkie. She is pure white and fuzzy just like a chick. Her name is Snowball. I have 1 Polish Chicken and her name is Squeekers. She Squeaked instead of cheeped when she was a chick. I have 1 Rhode Island Red/Silkie Mix. Her name is Cream. Her brother was named Coffee. I have 1 Rhode Island Red/Bantam mix named Rosie. She is a feisty thing and I named her after my little sister. I have one other hen and we know she is part Bantam, but not sure what she is mixed with, she doesn't look like the others. He name is Elsie. I have had them for about 3 years now and the 2 oldest have slowed down on egg production. I will be getting more eggs late spring to hatch more out. All of them are friendly. I pick them all up and carry them around. They see us come outside and they start singing and running. I have to keep them in a chicken run because my dog wants to play with them. He killed one of the 1st hens I got chasing it down. Poor thing died from a heart attack I guess. My sister, me and my husband built them a chicken house and the run. He was not sure it was a good idea to have them, but has grown just as attached to them as me. We enjoy our fresh eggs and love to give them away if someone is interested in them. I hope that you can convince your husband to get a couple. You will enjoy them. They all have different personalities. I love them as much as our dog and cat. |

They sound wonderful! My neighbor has some and tosses them over the fence to play in my yard with me and my granddaughter sometimes. They are great fun. One layed an egg up next to our pond... almost in the water! A friend has offered to give me a chicken house but hubby is still grumbling about it at this point but I might win him over to my side eventually. Thanks for sharing. So glad you are here. My brother is same way with his.. they like to sit in his lap. Maybe someday I will have some.

Welcome to you both Terri and Rebecca, It good to have you here. It is a wonderful place to be and a lot of fun and alot of things to learn if you so desire.
Terri you had a full wonderful life growing up and learned so much, that is so neat. I have a friend in Aberdeen are you anywhere close to there?
