Oh JodyW2F---I can only imagine what you must be going through, having to let go of what sounds like a big part of your life. You are in my thoughts through this transition. It will get better...if only any of us could predict when...
In the meantime, lots of support and stories and goodwill coming your way today and tomorrow and the day after that...
(Our new chickens are Gorgeous! and already laying--guess the move didn't stress them out too much. Whew...I've had customers waiting for farm eggs since January!)

| Thanks again Liz. My cows were sold in March, but I made sure they went 3 hours away. Unfortunately, the equipment is being sold only 20 minutes away. While I'm fortunate to have great family and friends, I still feel as though I'm under a microscope. Gee, I never knew equipment could be so personal:)I asked people to please not tell me how it went. I did the same with the cows but my dad, a life long farmer went anyways. Are your chickens laying enough to support your egg business? What kind did you get? My sister gives me eggs from her chickens thank God! Those store bought ones are for the birds(HA! no pun intended)and I have a job milking at a friends farm so have fresh milk. Just can't make good homemade ice cream without it, don'tcha agree? Auctions are hard...and the scruitiny can be brutal. I long for the day when old stuff in antique stores can talk. I'd sit and listen around the clock...
I think it's cool that you milk cows at your friend's place. Would love to learn that skill and make an arrangement with one of the dairy farms in our area to do that. You're right--ice cream just isn't the same without 'em.
So far, we've got Golden Comets and Rhode Island Reds. Our previous flock was quite the Rainbow Coalition--Golden Comets, Austrolorps, Auracanas, Americanas, Morans, Buckeyes, Silver Lace Wyandottes. I miss each and every one of them. We had as many as 50 3 years ago, but predators and old age eventually dwindled the flock to nothing. So...we're starting over with 13, and will keep building from there. I like inclusion as a general rule in life--diversity happens, but inclusion is a choice. Sold my first dozen from the new flock today, and with a daily take of 10 - 13 eggs, we'll be fine for now. It's once those folks in the big city of Columbus OH find out I'm back up and sellin' that things will get hectic. And I'm more than willing to barter my eggs for other items or services, so everyone walks away a winner.

I'm hoping for the best but met with my lawyer yesterday and now the farm has to go on the market as I'm involved in an LLC that went horribly wrong. I keep repeating to myself that "This too shall soon pass" but I'm 46, grew up on a farm and have been farming on my own since I was 22. I shouldn't complain as so many people have it so much worse and they say change isn't always bad...just a lil tough to swallow at this time.
Terri..have you done any riding lately? Do you see much wild life on your rides?
Liz..I laughed when you said that about antiques for I've always said to people I wish that old barns could talk..I have such a fascination with them and the work it took to build them. I love your barter system. I traded my bull calves to my neighbor in exchange for round bales for years and we both walked away happy. I have a friend and her 14 yr old son living with me and they had never had farm fresh eggs. They were amazed at the difference, especially the color of the yoke. Course compared to where I live, they lived in a metropolis, right next to a big ol mall. He loves it here and I wish every kid had a chance to grow up in the country. I do have to pick on em though by calling em city folk and reminding em that we live on a road not a street and if ya get hot go jump in the crick cuz there ain't no creeks round here:) Hopin you all have a great holiday weekend |

Could you tell us your real first name. We want to get personal.
I ride every week at this ranch called Susie Q Ranch that takes in unwanted horses. Sometimes I ride Tanner, a 23 year old, sweet gelding, and the last two weeks I have been riding Dolly, a mare who they used to breed. We rode by the ranch where her "husband" lives and they both got so excited. He is a beautiful black stallion and was really strutting his stuff around the ring as we passed by.

Sorry short memory. We saw a flock of quail take off as a Red-Tailed Hawk soared very low (3 feet at most) after them.
We see snakes, lizards, alpacas and llamas, a donkey, squirrels, dogs, other horses and sometimes even people. We ride in a conservation area that is adjacent to the ranch. So much rural fun just 2 miles from the freeway.

| Hey Terri! My name is Jody. I didn't realize red tail hawk hunted other birds. Where I live, there was a red tail hawk farm nearby. I didn't know they could be raised for meat. The farm went out and so there are e few around here. Last year as I was mowing a field, one swooped down and grabbed a snake. I was praying that he didn't drop it as he flew over head, I'm a lil scared of snakes(but felt bad for it as well) Isn't it just the best feeling to be outdoors? I don't know how people can work inside but I guess ya do what ya have to. That's so cool you have a conservation area to ride in and that you see other animals. I love that part of my life. I have been way out back in field before(once again mowing) and had a three legged coyote following the mower trying to catch moles or grasshoppers. I know they are predators but he was just trying to survive and what a smart way to do it. Anyways, sorry to go on, and sorry also for my punctuation. It's been a few years since school and it never was one of my strong points...just wanted to be outside then too:) Thanks for chattin..appreciate it! |

Hi Jody,
A three-legged coyote? He is smart.
I had a problem with the hawk attacking my little sparrows and finches while they were on the bird feeder. I moved the feeder.
Yesterday I saw a M/F pair of Orioles on my hummingbird feeder and a scrub Jay eating some seed I had out.
So cool.

Hey Terri. Are you able to do any riding this holiday weekend? We also have orioles here. They are beautiful. I've also seen indigo buntings and grackles. Oh! and this year I saw 2 flocks of snow geese. That was awesome!
It's such a nice thing that the ranch you ride at takes in unwanted horses. Are most of them already trained?
I'm working at a doggie day care/kennel where the dogs are treated so nice and a good portion of them are what they call rescue dogs meaning they were at the SPCA or the likes. I love seeing them so happy and having another chance at life. It's a good feeling. |

Hi Jody,
My sister took me to see an indigo bunting a couple years ago. Beautiful.
I ride on Wednesdays and the horses are all trained. Some are just too old for people to enjoy, since they want to gallop them, but I don't mind just walking and enjoying the view. I am going to start volunteering at a place called Therapeutic Handi-capable Equestrians. They give riding lessons to handicapped kids. I can't wait to start.

Hi Jody,
I did volunteer last Saturday for a couple hours and today for four hours at the therapeutic riding center. My feet are killing me. I was a side-walker and you have to be in constant motion for an hour. Half-way thru I asked for a relief. Boy, am I out of shape. There are a lot of teens/twentys who can walk for an hour, no problem, so they took over my charge. Then I switched to assisting other instructors dismount the riders, one of which was a lady in a wheelchair. It is so cool that they can ride even if they can't walk. I like grooming the horses and tacking them but I am sure I will learn to love the riders as I get to know them. Thanks for asking.

Hey Terri,
I have a friend that has worked for years with the mentally and physically handicapped. The stories I've been told are sometimes heart warming and sometimes terrifying to me. I give you so much credit for helping out.
My life is still very much up in the air. I've been fortunate enough to be self employed and do what I love for years. Guess you don't respect it 'til it's gone.
Anyways, thanks for the update. Hope you can keep helping out at your volunteer job. Should be more folks like you. Take care |

Hi Jody,
I volunteered this morning (Friday)at the therapeutic riding stable and also rode for pleasure on Wednesday. Today it was so great to see a little girl, who had arm and leg braces, be lifted onto the horse then they removed the braces so she could experience the freedom of movement.
Had to take it easy for a week since I dislocated a rib. Guess I overexercised for my age at Curves. (Nothing against Curves, it was me).

Hey Terri,
How's your rib feeling? How on earth did you dislocate it exercising? I have broken ribs on two different occasions, it hurts just to breathe, doesn't it? That little girl must have been so happy to have her braces off and be up on a horse. Scary the things we take for granted.
I've started another job. A neighboring farmer called me a few weeks ago and heard I had sold my herd so I gave my two weeks at the kennel and finished there Thursday. While I loved the dogs and the people I worked with, my heart's in dairy farming. It's a pretty big farm as they milk 200 cows and I get to operate equipment too(which I also like). I'm still milking at my friends farm too so I'm managing to stay busy..which seems to be the key right now. Oh! and a friend got me concert tickets for my b-day back in March so this weekend we went to a six flags amusement park and saw the Zach Brown Band. It was awesome and I even went on the ferris wheel..woohoo!! sell my cows and I go all out!:) Hope you're well and on the mend.

Hi Jody,
I was just doing some airplane twists and reaching down to my toes sideways in between working on the exercise machines at the gym and it just slipped out of place. Thank God for my chiropractor who put it back and it has stayed.
I am volunteering on Fridays at the therapeutic riding center and last week I worked with kids who were taking riding lessons and could handle the horses on their own. I just supervised from the center of the ring and helped tack and un-tack the horses. Much less walking.
Sounds like your life has really taken a great turn. Funny how things just turn out isn't it?

I don't even know what an airplane twist is but at our age it sounds painful. Glad you're getting better.
I had hopes that things were getting better and still do but my ex business partner has now demanded that the house I live in goes up for sale with the farm. It was agreed upon that the house would be mine for the labor I've provided for the past 4+ years. It's so messy. I'm sorry, I don't even really know you..and
I do go on but I appreciate you listening and responding back. Tough patch in life right now. I don't mean to sound like an idiot but I'm truly a farm girl. I have fallen off conveyors(concussion, broken ribs,dislocated fingers)had a cow screw up my wrist so badly that they told me I was gonna lose my hand if I didn't come in for emergency surgery and then, cut off a coupla ends of my fingers in the above mentioned conveyor(I hate that thing). My family laughs with me(love them) umm..they are all dairy farmers also and they keep telling me to write Jody..write a book. Who would believe it? It is kinda funny. Thanks for letting me talk Terri..is what I needed. Take care

Welcome Jody,
You are going to love the MJF Girls. We all have so much in common no matter our ages or place of abode. The biggest plus is the way we support each other.
I live on my husband's family ranch purchased in 1905. Five generations have lived here and raised cattle all those years. It is a beautiful place. Lots of critters. A spring fed creek. We raise Angus cattle.
I am glad you will still be working with cattle. There are just some of us folk that have a sprinkling of dirt in our blood. We have to be outside.
