The vet came out today to give my donkeys their West Nile Virus and Tetanus shots. Only one of the two donkeys was due a Rabies vaccine, but I realized after the vet left and after examining the bill that he had given both of them Rabies shots. I called the office immediately and the secretary assured me that it wouldn't hurt the donkey even though he wasn't due his shot until September. That's six months early! She said she'd issue a credit, but that doesn't ease my mind. Now the question is did he really give the shot or did he just overcharge me. Does anyone know if there can be harmful effects from giving rabies shots before they are due? Seems like these days one has to be careful and double check everything and everybody. Oh, and the vet was an hour late for the appointment. He's always late. Unfortunately, there are no other large animal vets in this area.

If he was given the vaccine again it should not be a problem or pose any health threat. The post exposure protocol for rabies vaccination calls for a series of 7 over several days, so you shouldn't be worried about that.

Thanks, Rachel. I've been so worried about my boy. You helped ease my mind. I am going to call the vet's office again tomorrow and ask if he did, in fact, give him the vaccination. He may not even remember.

I have worked for a few vet's over the years, they were all great Docs, but they all were always late due to emergencys, owners questions and shootin the breeze, and then travel time in between ranches...rabies shots come in 1 yr, and 2 1/2 yr intervals, either one being early should not hurt...as far as worring about being charged for a vaccine you did not get, as far as a rabies shot goes, vets are usually pretty careful because it is a shot that only they can give in most states, and he will be able to count the vials and match them to cert's...

Thanks, Tina. I wasn't worried about being charged for a shot the vet didn't give. My main concern was with correct record keeping and scheduling. In other words, my donkey was clearly due the rabies in September. From what you said, the vet should be able to tell me for sure if he gave the shot. That's certainly good to know. As far as large animal vets never being on time, this particular vet is usually pretty good about showing up within half an hour of an appointment. I can deal with that. However, today he was an hour late. He's a nice guy. When he came, I said, "You must have had an emergency." He did apologize. I like him much better than his partner, who is lacking in communication skills. That guy is always at least an hour late and one time it was three hours. No one ever called and, when he finally showed up, he never offered an apology.

I think tina is right on. They have to be careful about the rabies because it has legal issues. I would say score!!! You got a free rabies shot. And since they both got it at the same time it will be easier to keep your records. Just make sure that since they are crediting the charge that they don't delete the record of the shot.
But as you said you do have to watch very carefully and get an explanation of why for every shot. I once lost a beautiful baby horse cause the vet over did the medication. Sometimes vets forget to take into account what medication has been given before the horse is taken to the vet. Also sometimes medicine can mask the problem. In fact I try to not give any meds before I take the horse in to the vet. I try to decide if its going to be a vet thing or me deal with it at home and go one way or another with it. Not really an issue in this case, just something I want to share.

Hey Laura,
You're right -- the shot was free! I did speak with the vet on Friday and he admitted that he had given the shot in error. He apologized, but said (as you did) that at least now both mother and son are on the same schedule. He assured me that there will be no adverse side effects. Whew! I've learned my lesson and will, in future, make clear first thing what's to be done.
