Hello Everyone! I just found Mary Jane's Farm Magazine and looove it! A little about me - I live on a century farm in NC. My husband's family has owned this farm since its original land grant. We are the 7th generation to live here. We grow a big garden and raise honeybees. We call our apiary "Bee Haven" and I am MissBeeHaven! I grew up in town but have been a farm girl since our marriage in 1983. As a child growing up in SC, I spent many weekends and summers on my grandparent's tobacco farm. What a wonderful time that was! I am glad to now have lots of farmgirl friends to share things with. Let me hear from you! |

Welcome, Adele! You will love the farmgirls. We used to raise bees. They swarmed years back..and we just never got back into it. Thank heaven for farmers' markets.
Hey, do you want a side of bee for your freezer? (This was a bad joke I made up when we were raising them.)

Hey there Adele, welcome ! I am new here too and I noticed you said that you were originally from SC. What part ? I am from Sunset which is near Pickens very close to the NC border! You will love it here! If you have'nt already done so, you will have to check out the farmgirl swaps. I just did my first one and it was so much fun, I had an awsome partner. Well have fun Sandy

Hi Sandy! Thanks for the warm welcome. I'm actually from the Hartsville/Darlington area. I still have family there(the Lee's). My cousin, who's name is also Sandy Lee, lives in Florence! How about that for coincidence! Dallas is not too far from the SC line - just straight down Hwy 321 about 10 miles and I'm a Sandlapper again! I'd love to do a farmgirl swap sometime! That sounds like fun!

Hi Adele. Welcome to MJF. I have a ewe named Adele.
I may be coming to you for advice. I'm getting a few bee hives in April and no nothing at all about keeping them. I just ordered a Book of Bees by Sue Hubbell. I love it already. But noticed it was written in the 80's. I love honey bees and can't wait to get them. Glad you're here!

Adele, Lee is my middle name but still a coincidence. You must be more to the coast and I am nearer the mtns. But still not too far away. Hope you have a great week!!

Hi Kris! Nice to meet you! Beekeeping is a lot of fun! I'm glad you are getting some hives. My husband and I knew nothing about beekeeping a few years ago but went to "Bee School". It was a ten week course (only meeting once a week) put on by the NC State Beekeepers Association. We received certification at the end of the course and there are opportunities to receive advanced certifications. We also belong to our local "bee club". We get great advice and hear speakers from all over the state. Very educational and informative. You'll have a ball with the "girls." They are amazing little creatures. |

I am taking a bee workshop that a blogger near me is giving the middle of April. I need that. And I am reading all I can about bees. But I know I'll learn so much more actually having them. It's scary getting started. I've wanted bees for years and now seems like the right time. My husband is retiring this year and has wanted bees too. This will give him something to do! I grow market gardens so really want the bees here.

Hi Adele, I love the history of your farm. Please keep a journal and share with us on the Farmgirls who have gone before us page. Bees are so important and seem to be disappearing so thank you for taking care of them. Email us if you need anything. Terri Hemet CA Farmgirl # 4720
