Any other quilters? I hand piece and hand quilt. I call it my therapy session. I saw a bumper sticker "Old quilters never die--they just go to pieces!" Just now I am working on a Jacob's Ladder in blues, browns, and cream colors. Should be ready by Christmas---'07. |

I am amazed by quilters! I do quilt. I love quilts. Especially those that are done by hand. Don't scold me ...but I machine applique, machine piece, and have my quilts quilted by my friend who has a longarm. For me I L O V E fabric. I am not good at sewing , but it is a way for me to work with fabric. It is all about fabric for me and quilting is a way to use that medium. I know what I am capable of for sewing a quilt, I guess that makes me a fabric lover who quilts. I could never do what sunshine does (amazing) I don't have that in me.In fact folk style , grungy quilts are better for me because if you mess up and it's "wrong" that's ok. I am not and never will be about precision. God bless my friend who quilts my quilts, it's not an easy job. It's a good thing I am such a nice person ;0)

I'm a quilter too and have the fabric stash to prove it! I tend to like the period patterns and vintage/repro fabrics (Meadowlark sent me some gorgeous ones last year!) I hand or machine piece but have always hand quilted anything bigger than a table runner. Needless to say finished projects does not outweigh quilt tops at my house! I might have to hire our Berries to finish a few for me , her work is exquisite!
Theresa- Nothing to feel guilty about! You do the part that gives you pleasure, and your friend finishes the rest; sounds like a good deal to me!

I love to quilt too. I usually machine piece..although I like hand sewing best for sure. I try to hand quilt some of my quilts but sometimes don't. Gloria is machine quilting the last one I did for my daughter. I can hardly wait to see it. How wonderful to have HER do it!!! I just basted up an autumn quilt..nothing fancy..picture on my blog ....that I plan to hand quilt. I am borrowing a frame..and hoping santa brings me one this year!
The colors in your Jacob's ladder sound really pretty, Florence! I like that pattern alot.

Jenny -- your Autumn quilt is amazing! I'm a wannabe quilter. I've done rag quilts but not attempted a regular one. But I keep collecting quilt patterns. Does that count? HA!

I love to hand "do". I also like the Jacob's Ladder pattern! It's so old fashioned... and the bold diagonal is very appealing. Has anyone else learned hand piecing from Jinny Beyer's books? She explained how in such a way that made it easy for me. I like primitive, but went through a process (making quilts for my MIL and mother) where I needed to learn how to do more detailed work, and my machine won't allow me to make good points piecing angles together, plus working at the machine bothered my shoulders. Now I just plain enjoy the hand work better! Jenny, hope you get your frame!

I love her books! I remember when she won some contest for a really intricate Mariner's Compass quilt and used batik fabrics which made the design all the more interesting. She does really precise and accurate piecing and her books have helped me alot through the years. Thanks for reminding me Ann, I haven't looked at them for some time!

Hello, ladies. I did not know that so many of you hand pieced and/or hand quilted. I have yet to hand piece, but my time is coming. I usually take embroidery for hand work while out. I use my machine for piecing and have quilted both ways (hand or machine). I think the tool makes the difference. I have a Pfaff sewing machine with a built in walking foot so it does layers really well.
I like all types of quilts-rag, simple piecing, machine and/or hand applique, complicated blocks once in a while, pretty much everything.

Oh Bramble... that mariner's compass quilt was what I made my mom, but in an eliptical shape (help from husband with drawing it). And every piece outlined in a mini border stripe. The quilt took 3+ years, and I loved every minute of it. It's way too formal for my own tastes, but my mother knows she's loved!
Clare, I'm sure your Pfaff is a dream machine. I did get a walking foot when trying to sew together rows of triangle squares. The new foot helped, but I realized that machinery and I don't mix well. HA! I also hand applique, my last finished quilt having wool appliqued onto homespun. That's a lot of fun... I don't know how it will go through the washer, however. Better keep it clean!
