hey Krystle,
I use good old latex satin sheen house paint for the inside of my trailers.... well actually, that is not totally true,,, In the SCAMP that I had, I used Semi-gloss but in the Scotty I used satin because it went over wood... the Scamp had a rubberey texture interior. So the semi gloss adheared better.
The Tin Cup that hubby & I are working on now, will get a new coat of stain... but we have to test on scrap wood,,, if we want a glossy finish, semi or satin....
If you are painting over old paneling,,, I would recommend using a primer first to get the paint to adhere... also, make sure you wipe don and clean off any oil grim that might be on the walls... then primer... and let the primer set for a day...to really dry good.
Then have fun painting and decorating your trailer/camper playhouse on wheels...

You and Karen (kpaints) would make a dangerous pair! lol! she too was a painting contractor.
Painting (rooms) is one thing I Hate to do! I always seem to make a mess and get more paint on me then the walls,,, and,,, yes, I paint outside the lines... I can Not paint a straight 'cut-in' to save my life! I watched Karen do it (she painted my guest room) and she made it look so easy! ...
but not me,,, just call me 'messy marvin-ette... lol!

Nothing has been painted before. It is the original paneling (which I cannot think of the name right now!) So for now I will call it the paneling. The entire thing (walls, cupboards, drawers) is of the same paneling. The only difference is in the bathroom which looks to be a wallpaper paneling? Is ther such a thing??? It is original 80's. It's in extremely good shape but I can't stand how dark it is with that fake paneling. A lot has been updated like the stainless steel fridge and oven/cook top. Plus I want to repaint the ceiling.
I also want to get the family friendly eco paint if that will work in the camper as we will be living out of it for a few months I don't want that puppy to off-gas on us! Hope that gives you the info you need! Thanks again :D

Also, since we have kids will an eggshell or semigloss work best or neither of those? I'm thinking yellow walls, white cupboards red or green accents(mostly with curtains and reupholstery work that I would like to do) and I have no idea what to do with that bathroom yet. It does have a skylight!!!

Krystle,
If it is that brown paneling you should prime it first. I always use Bin Shellac based primer. It will seal all the brown stain from coming through your paint color and will also hide any stains or water marks. It should be used outdoors cause it can smell strong. It is shellac based and white, but you can tint it to make a good undercoating for whatever color you choose. I also like Behr paint and primer in one that is sold at Home Depot. You could use this right over the paneling after you wash it. If you are using a light color I would still go with the Bin primer and then your paint. A lot of campers have laminated wall board in their bathrooms. You really will have a hard time painting it unless it is primed first. That Bin primer I have even used to paint counter-tops.

So what kind of sheen would be best for "cleanability" with kids? I personally don't like the look of high gloss so anything under that but I'm getting mixed reviews online regarding that also. Thanks for the tips! I can't wait until I can get started with the priming!!!

I always use a low lustre also known as eggshell finish. It is almost flat but washable. Since you have kids I recommend a satin finish. Not as shiny as gloss but still washable.

Ok, sounds great thanks! The next problem I have is trying to pick out a color scheme/theme. . . I LOVED the yellow but my husband hated it. In fact no yellow main color! So it's back to the drawing board for me! Problem is I just love life and everything that I can't seem to pick a theme other than yellow because yellow is so sunshiney! Then I thought about using greys and then using a brownish red OR a green and as my accent color paint or stencil in 3-4 birch trees on the wall dividing the living space from the bunks but I am having a hard time picking out what colors because what looks good in the store looks TOTALLY different in the lighting of the camper.
Any tips on picking a color palette or theme? Is it easier to pick colors if I have a theme?

I like yellow also, especially the shade of butter. Looks really good with gray and white or black and white. Maybe your Hubby would like it better if you use those accent colors. Another note is yellow and greay are big this season, lots of accessories in these colors. If Hubby is dead set against yellow then maybe a light soft green? One way to get a good color is to find one you like and then go one or two shades lighter on the paint chip. Colors will get more intense in smaller spaces and spread over bigger areas than the chip.

Thanks Diane, that was exactly what I needed to know! I knew colors get deeper once on a wall but I didn't know how light to go from the color chip at the store!
Now planning ahead to this summer, I am planning on painting the outside of the camper.... What do I use on the exterior? Thanks so much for all the help answering my questions!!!!

You should wash the outside with a good cleaner, I use ammonia in hot water and then sand everything and wash again. You can use Rustoleum paint and a foam brush or roller. The best finish is automotive, but you would need to go to a body shop. Get the MaryJane's Glamper book or the Sister's on the Fly book from Amazon. They have some good information in them. I am painting the stripe on my camper this spring, but will probably have my son paint it with automotive enamel in a spray booth.
