Well, this afternoon I had on one of my mom's vintage aprons. And I was making spaghetti sauce. It splattered. Which is what aprons are for, but not vintage ones that belonged to your mommy. I saw the stains and gently took a washcloth to them, and the cotton fabric separated like paper! If my mom was watching from heaven, I hope she forgives me! I am going to mend it as best I can, and clean it as best I can, and then it will be forever something to look at and not wear. And it fit me the best - because I am shaped just like my mom. Oh dear....lesson learned the hard way and I do not want you to have to learn the hard way, too! Take care of those vintage aprons!

JP -- I'm so sorry to hear about your mom's apron. Vintage fabric can be so delicate. You should make one like it in new fabric or have someone make one for you.
I have an apron that my husband's grandmother made. It's yellow gingham and she put this intricate embroidery at the waist, pockets, and at the hem. I'm going to save my money and have it mounted under glass and framed so hang in my house.

So sorry to hear about the apron. it must have been the acid in the tomato sauce. After you repair it, I would definitely take measurements and either make your own from that or have a friend do it for you. It's not too difficult if you have sewing experience.
I would think you could still wear it for baking as there is no acid in the butter, sugar and flour. You are lucky to have an apron. My mom never wore them, but her mom sewed and worre them every day.

You know I think I will trace it and try to make a new one that is the same size and shape! Good idea, Kay! I have not done that before, but it will be a fun project.
And thank you all for the sympathy. I knew you all would undestand how sad I was! It is like the time my daughter took my grandmother's quilt on a picnic and got grass stain on it! It makes my heart heavy to damage irreplacable family treasures.

I understand how you feel, but I know my grandma is glad I'm wearing out some handmedown dishtowels she embroidered many, many moons ago, guessing 60-70 yrs.
The wedding ring quilt she made me when I was a teenager (she figured she wouldn't be around when I got married, which she WAS around for). She insisted I save it for when I got married (23+ yrs), then to use it. I have had to patch, de-construct, and re-do a couple times. I love it even more. I have decided to hang it on the spare bedroom wall for a while (I'm sure she's scolding about that).But I will wash it and air it on the clothesline and put it back on our bed again soon.
