Just wanted to update you on Blondie.
She is so happy, and you can tell (physically) that she is already looking better.
Thanks to my mother, we have the cash for the next bag of horse feed. She also knows someone who may be able to help us with a halter.
DD has gotten on her for a ride, but doesn't want to saddle her until she has gained weight. DD also walked her around and even brought her up to the door to say hello to me. I have to admit, she's growing on us. We all love her.

We are considering that, but we don't have the cash for fencing and a lean-to. Right now she is in the stall(s) we built for the goats that need to be moved from the barn that is falling apart. We need to move the goats before March, which would put her horse without any coverage. We don't farm crops either. It's just one battle after another here. I just wish we'd get a break.

Unless there are laws or regulations where you live governing what a horse needs, I wouldn't worry about the horse not having a cover. I live in sloppy, soggy western Oregon. My horses are pastured and there is no shelter. When it gets below 40* F with rain, snow, sleet, wind, I put waterproof insulated blankeys on them and feed them double the hay. I've done this for 7+ years with no ill effects other than having to repair blankeys.
I went to college in IN so I'm a bit familiar with the winters back there.
What size blankey would the horse wear?
From what I understand, it's the digestion process that creates heat. I have actually seen this work and it happens quickly. I went out to feed a couple of years ago in the cold rain and the Arab was shivering. None of the others was. So I spread out the hay and went back to get the blankeys. By the time I returned, maybe 10 minutes, the Arab was no longer shivering. I was amazed.

Trees can be adequate shelter if there is at least a quarter acre of them. You could also try to see if you can get pallets for free from automotive shops. We have a friend who has a shop in Albuquerque that has an endless supply of them and we can just take them if we can get down there to get them. They are 4x4ft and 1 inch plywood. Pretty good quality too. Maybe you could also salvage some of the old barn to make a new smaller one. I know it's hard Hon, and in my case getting hubby and others to cooperate has been a chore. But they pretty much have gotten to where they do these days. But I have had to put my foot down pretty hard sometimes to get things done around here. But I just be pigheaded about it cause my horses are depending on me. And if one of them gets cold and dies I'm the one that has to live with it, so I pretty much listen first to what the horse is telling me they need, and everyone else can just deal with it. All 18 of the horses on this place have shelter otherwise I can't sleep if even one doesn't. And nobody's happy when Mama aint happy. Tall blooded horses are especially in need of it, and thats what it looks to me like your horse might be. Tall Thoroughbred types require 3x at least the feed of a mustang or a stout quarter horse type. Laura

See about one of those temporary garage set ups that is poles with a heavy duty tarp over it. Some times you can find them inexpensive in your local buy / sell /swap magazine or on Craigslist. It would get you through. On cold nights you will.have to blanket cause they're not warm but will keep the wind rain snow off.

Praying for a solution for blondie. I am happy to hear that your mom and dad are able to help out a bit, and I am still praying for a job for your DD. Hugs to you,

I don't believe in our area that you can use trees for shelter.
I have a halter and lead rope you can have, do you still need them? We have to drive out and get hay east on 76 next week I will be happy to bring them. I also have friends who can bring them to Lakewood, Elyria, etc... My SO's job has him driving from Toledo to Youngstown and Cleveland to Canton.
What kind of food is Blondie eating? Is she eating beet pulp? Did you get her feet done?
