Howdy gals! This is my first post. I moved from Missouri to Iowa about 4 1/2 years ago to marry my dh. Been a country gal all of my life. Mary Jane's Farm has really helped me feel "at home" --especially love reading "what's for dinner tonight"!

Are there any gals out there from my neck o' the woods? Would love to compare gardening notes/rural life here in southern Iowa.

Hi Nancy and welcome! This is such a great place, I think you'll really love it. Always good to meet another Iowa Farmgirl. I live about 20 minutes from Cedar Rapids and am currently sitting and watching the snow fall ( I think I'll be here awhile! LOL!). Again, welcome!

Welcome,
I was born in Fort Dodge Iowa, Mom was born in Terrell and I can remember my grandma talking about friends in Ottumwa. I am in California now but we can always share about how our crops and families are growing.

Welcome Nancy: I live in Minnesota but my grandfather lived in Ottumwa. I've been there a lot. I love Iowa. You'll love the gals there. Hope you can find some sisters in your area. Good luck.

Thanks again to all you farm gals! I simply love being close to the land, and having kinship with other gals who feel the same way makes it all that much better!

Dh and I raise cattle, chickens, row crops and feed for the animals. We like being as self-sufficient as possible. MJF is a great resource!

I've always wanted to make my own braided rug, and I'm doing that this winter. It's made out of old socks and sweatshirt material!

Thanks again for welcoming me "to the farm"!

Hey Nancy,
Welcome to Iowa! I live about an hour north of you in Toledo. Right on 63! A friend of ours from college lives in Ottumwa. You certainly have gotten in on quite a storm the last two days. Where are you from in Missouri. My husband is originally from near Golden City, although he has lived here since he was five. Let me know what questions you have. I was born and raised in Iowa, but in the Northeast corner by Decorah. I have lived here in central Iowa for about 20 years, so I have adapted to the milder winter temps! Just started my seedlings last weekend, so am looking forward to having salad greens and radishes in a few weeks.

Joy

Hi Terri,
Well, DH (if I am understanding the lingo right) means "dear hubby" for me. I believe DD means "dear daughter", etc. Correct me if I'm wrong gals!

Hi Joy,

Yes! We had quite a bunch of snow! Seems unusual now though, since it's been such a mild winter.

I am from northern Missouri -- not too far from Bethany, MO., which sets on I-35 about halfway between Kansas City, Missouri, and Des Moines. I only moved about 100 miles from MO. to where I live now, so the climate is very similar, but the growing season is a bit shorter here. We are anxious to start gardening too! One thing we struggle with is onions. We usually plant sets (I have planted seedlings too), but it seems hard to end up with big onions...how early do you set them out?

Beautiful day here today, but COLD!

Nancy
