Have y'all followed any themes or traditions with the naming of your animals?
I'm almost embarrassed at some of the names I've come up with.
A litter of dogs had 'fruit' names....Berry, Melon, , Plum, Cantaloupe, and Grape.
Goats with 'M' names...Mocha, Molly, Millie, Mindy, Mandy, Mixie, Mojo
Goats/dogs with 'K' names....Kairi, Kailyn, Kara, Koki
Molly had babies named Holly and Dolly (so original! ha ha)
Buck Zorro sired babies names Zed and Zoey.
Chickens with Cajun names...Gumbo, Creole, Tabasco
Ok, that's enough 'confessing' ....
One of the best compliments from one of my daughters: "Moma, you smell good...like dirt." |

I hope my Windy Pines cousins, Michele, sees this. She has been a dairy, beef cattle farmer for decades. They have come up with some really fun themes for her animals names. The "Austin Powers" movie ones were one of her funniest.

I started the lambs last year on A names. Abraham, Axel, Alfie, Adele, Anabelle, Adalaide and Amarillo. This year starts B names. The goats are just whatever I think they look like or if they were born near a family birthday, like Iris Josie last year, they get named after them. I did name my first 3 ewes after my grands middle names, Leelah, Fiona and Gracie.

We haven't gotten our chickens yet, but they all have names already. We made a list one day while driving down the road. They follow a theme of celebrity names with the word hen in them...Hen Solo...Hennifer Aniston...Hengelina Joli...etc.

Catherine, love this post! When I got my first cat, I named his after my great-grandfather and my father's favorite dog; Henry Dragon. My second cat was named Zoe, after my Grandmother!

I know what you mean. I had a litter of beagel puppies, moms name is Dolly Wood and fathers name is Stick.....So....the puppies names were Splinter, Nutmeg(Meg), Cherry, Cedar(Cece) and I forget the other three. But it is sort of wierd isnt it? I was originally going to name my Nubian babies by the letter for the year. Like this year is "D" but I havent done any names like that yet. LInda, who I got my start with my goats from has the name Bean in her lines, so I was going by that last year and named some like String Bean Betty, Ima Lima Bean. And she also has a flower name thing to. So I have a Sweet Pea, from her dam who was Morning Glory. But mainly I look at the babies that I want to keep and think of what would fit them. If it doesnt sound right they dont get that name. Is frustrating sometimes....Good Luck..

My daughter, Rebecca named our litter of 3 kitties: Hershey, Dove and Ghiradelli(sp?)! Bet you know what she likes!

Our next dogs name is going to be Hoover if male. Eureka or meila if female. All.vacuum cleaner names.

Kristin...you reminded me that I did an alphabet theme one time...A-Aria, B-Bella, C-Celeste,D-Darcy, E-Ebony.

forgot to add that we had a rabbit named Cyndi Lopper(she was a lop rabbit..lol)also a rabbit named Nacho.

I have a tendency to name my pets also with human names. So we have Cutie (that's not a human name lol), but we also have a Rex, Roxie, Molly, and Fergie. Then there was my beloved dog (miss her dearly) named Suzi.

Any way some of the animals came with their names and some we gave barn names but most we named. Jake is a boarder. Our daughters live and work here on the ranch but we are all adults. Just act like kids.
Nothing more fun than looking forward to a new little critter to name a fun name.
Names to avoid for horses, Lucky, Smart or Buck. Just kidding.

I love all the names, Laura. I had a cat name RK. I could never understand why I named that cat RK. When it meowed it sounds like rrrkkkkk. She got run over by a car, and hubby says, as we were burying the cat, "This cat sure lived up to its name." I asked him to explain. He said, "I thought you named her Road Kill". No!!!!

Cute post! I can feel the love everyone has for their "babies".
Please don't think me crazy, but when my husband and I got our first cat, he said just to give it time. . . .dogs and cats name themselves. Huh?! Was he serious? But as it turns out, the names that finally came to mind and stuck, very much suit their personalities. And unlike most cats, they come when you call their name; none of this "here, kitty kitty kitty". It all began with an Irish theme; Katie, Duncan, and Mollie. Then along came Tessa. Is that French? Anyway, she's prissy, beautiful, and wants all the attention! (Seems French to me!)

When my son was in kindergarten our pets were named after foods. Oreo-the cocker spaniel; Twinkie-the cat; and Muffin-the goldfish.
Now it is just random names we think of. Wiley; Tripp; and Kirby. All dogs.

My husband and I are dairy farmers. We have too many themes to mention. A lot of our cow families start with the same letter, but some are more creative. Some of my favorites are:
States - started with Kansas now includes Georgia and Maryland
Chocolate - A cross breed that was born looking like chocolate rather than black. She gave birth to CoaCoa and Chocolate Chip (we call her C.C.)
We also did the rhyme thing starting with Mary then came Carey and Sherry.
My all time favorite for our farm is a set of twins born a couple years ago. There's holsteins, but one is red and one is black. We named them peanut butter (the black one) and jelly (the red one).

We let the kids name the chickens. A few names were pretty normal, like Fuzzy and Speedy...but then my oldest decided he needed a namesake; so we had Braxton Chick (a hen, lol). Then he got on a body part kick...and so came Heady, Feety, Nosey, and Toenail. Lucky for us, we stopped at 7 hens; otherwise, I'd hate to think what body parts would've been next!!!

Our cat is named TUNA because she was a stray that showed up at our door one day, and all that we had to feed her was.......
You guessed it-a can of tuna.
2 of our hens are named Star and Liberty because we got them 5 years ago on Flag Day.
Our dog is Maggie- we rescued her and that was her name.
My daughter named. Our rabbit Riley....Riley Rabbit we call her.
We are in the planning stage of naming the new chicks we will be getting this spring.
Such fun!
