I don't know much, but in my limited experience I have found that one can get a basic incubator for about $125 from Murray Mcmurray or some of the other hatcheries. The ones with the turners work better cause you don't have to open them to turn the eggs every day. You can probably find some good deals on craigslist. Sometimes like $25 for a basic one like I mentioned above. Hope you have fun. Backyardchickens.com is a forum and website that has a lot of good info. Below is the link for it. Have fun!
hubby built one for me out of plywood and two light sockets ... I used and old pan for water, and wire for the eggs to rest on. I may even have directions to build it somewhere. I think it cost about 10.00 to build, I hatched my duck and goose eggs in it for years.
Laura, I used an old brownie pan to hold the water in the bottom ... the top glass is from an old photo frame ... really this is very cheap to make. Had just about every thing and use scraps ...

Teri! That's really cool -- could you give some more description? Our 4h group is going to try to make an incubator for really cheap this year -- looking for ideas! :)
I think hubby wrote the supplies list down ... let me see if I can find it, if not I will ask him to do another one ... give me a few days ... weekend.
