Today was such a cold, icy, winter day here in KY. When I came home from work I looked out my kitchen window, to see my bird feeder empty.
I am an avid bird watcher and feeder ... So with this cold weather please remember to feed our feathered friends.

Thanks, Teri. I was outside today in our 75 degree weather and the birds were just singing beautifully. I came in , saw your post, ran back out to put bird seed out. Thanks for reminding me. I guess these birds have flown down south and are hungary, too! I've noticed a few of them are building nests. I think one of the outside cats noticed it also!

I am a regular at Wild Birds Unlimited! LOL I have about five feeders and this year there are cardinals, yellow and purple finches, junkos, chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, morning doves, sparrows and this rare bird. (see picture)

I also try to give them fresh water, but hard to keep it fluid in below zero temperatures. I am going to invest in a bird bath heater soon.

awwwwwww, we don't have to many of those birds here ... in KY. most people call them dinner :(
But in MA. I had 13 that would come clean my feeders out, so I got them their very own. Here I have 6 that I keep full from about December to March. And of course I grow my own sunflowers, but... don't get to harvest many seeds ... LOL

This mornings visitors ...

Teri, we have made the pinecone=peanut butter-birdseed feeders for birds to hang in the apple trees. But I have 6 mean ole hungry barn cats. Birds don't stand a chance around here. And I have never seen a live squirel here either. Theos cats are ruthless. So I feel like it's very unfair to the birds to feed them for a cat to get them. I do have a bird bath that I keep full and keep an eye on, just in case.

Pretty pictures. I love the red birds in the snow.

I have plenty of squirrels!! I will be happy to share them if anyone wants some, LOL! They clean my fenders out, too, but when it's this cold I kinda feel sorry for them. My feeder sometimes looks like a squirrel party. Sigh....

Love the photo, Diane!

On a serious note, this was a good reminder. When we put food out for the birds they become dependent on us. Thanks for the reminder.

When I sent my hubby out to fill the feeder he said the wind had blown the flip top up and filled it with snow. The little bit of seed that was still in it was a big block of ice. He had to chisel it out. I'm not surprised that it had blown open with those crazy winds we had last week...

And Diane...I have seen those rare birds here at my home as well, but my variety are black (something I had never seen or knew existed until I moved to Michigan). We call them squinjas.

Those squinjas are nasty little buggers too. For some reason they are much more aggressive than the gray squirrels, even though I have read that they actually are gray squirrels, just black ones. Luckily, at our new house there aren't as many as there were at our house in the city. I was told that's because the coyotes keep their population down out here as well as the cougars that Michigan's brilliant DNR decided to introduce into the state to keep the deer population down. I have yet to see either of those and I don't really think I want to either...

We don't have livestock yet, but we are planning on getting chickens in the spring. They will be locked up inside the barn at night, so hopefully I won't have to worry about cougars, unless they make an appearance during the day to attack my chickens while free ranging. If that's the case the DNR will get a lawsuit from this mama because I also have children that play out there. That's really my only fear with the cougars. I probably should be more careful about sending my boys out to the barn at night to get wood even.

Teri,
Too funny! Wisconsin is full of "snow birds", they all have condos in Florida!

Diane,
if it gets much colder, this girl might be a "snow bird" too ... I really do not like the cold at all any more. After being in KY. for over 8 years now ... I freeze when it dips below 50 degrees ... funny when you think I cam from a place that it would get as cold as -20 with the wind chill ...brrrrr

After living in the south for 40 years I had forgotten how cold cold really is, but I'm finding out again this first winter back in Indiana. In Texas we went through a couple hundred pounds of sunflower seeds each winter. Here in Southern In the birds are eating it, but the ones we have the most seem to prefer the suet cakes. With the various woodpeckers, chickadees, juncos, nuthatches. etc, I'm putting out new blocks almost every other day. Guess I might have to start making my own. But they sure are fun to watch.
