Sometimes I think my messages just blow through my children's ears about living sustainably. But lately my daughter has been bringing home food from other kids lunches. She's only 6 and she mentioned something about food for the chickens. The next day there were two bags of baby carrots and a couple of apples. So I asked her "where did you get those apples Sadie ? I don't remember putting apples in your lunch today". "Those are for the horses", she replies. Next day little containers of salad, for the "chickens". Each day there's a little more food coming home in Sadie's backpack. She says they all bring it over to her desk and tell her to feed it to the chickens or horses. I really smile every time I imagine them and the message we are bringing to her classroom.

Thanks, it's hard to live on a farm, build a farm, but times like this make it all worthwhile. They happen all the time too.

Well, on one hand, that is great! Better to find another recipient, than to just throw it away. But on the other hand, if it were my kid doing the "donating," I'd be a little irritated that he's not eating the APPLE I put in the lunch for HIM to eat! Core, yes... apple missing two bites no. And what's more... I wouldn't even know he wasn't eating his apple! An empty lunch bag, does not mean a full stomach.

You might want to set up some sort of deal where other parents are aware of this philanthropy. Maybe send in an empty coffee can with a lid for true SCRAPS... but still encourage the kids to eat their lunch!
