I started taking elderberry syrup. Once a day for the past week. I may up my dose to 2-3 times a day. I have that telltale tickle in my lungs like I might be getting sick. I also started taking more of my probiotics and am thinking about doing my neti pot.

What else do you do to keep from getting sick?

I didn't get a flu shot this year - hubby isn't happy about it since I work around kids.

Vitamin C, and if I feel any kind of tickle in my throat or lungs I start gargling with salt water. Works for me. I also use the neti pot.
Can't say enough about washing hands often.

I second that stuff too!

If I suspect even the slightest tickle...I'll take it in the a.m. and p.m.

I also also suggest the ZICAM dissolving losenges. These have the zinc in them and are supposed to shorten the cold/flu duration and symptoms. You can find the same thing in generic at most drug stores

Ginger is also good as well as zinc. Graverobber's tincture is excellent, I make mine with rosemary, thyme, cinnamon, lemon, eucalyptus, and lavender with cider vinegar; I take this at least daily during the school months (when we see so many sick kids at the office). There are several different recipes for making your own graverobber's tincture (or oil)and I believe you can find it to buy online as well--might also consider looking up Four Thieves Oil (same thing). I don't get the flu vaccine ever and I work in a pediatrician office (and we've been round and round about that every year). Out of the other employees who received the flu vaccine (everyone but me) we've had 4 who got the flu anyway. We have had alot of kids coming in with flu who did get the vaccine. There are two strains of flu out this year that are not in the current vaccine, so it won't do much good anyway.

I use Herbal Resistance Liquid by Source Naturals (I think that who makes this stuff). I will take it for 2 weeks in the fall when people around me start getting sick, or if I feel like I starting to come down with a cold/flu type illness, or before I get on an airplane.

Elderberry and apple cider vinegar have helped me fight off the flu. I've only had a minor cold since September. Good luck on finding what will help you stay healthy!

Silver is also very good for flu (and other cooties). We've also been seeing alot of cases of flu with secondary pneumonia and/or bronchitis. Take care!

Good news and the bad news.

good news is that tickle is gone. I've been taking the elderberry 2-3 times a day and adding my probiotics and vitamin C.

Bad news - I had a headache on and off all day yesterday along with nausea. Seems to be better today.

I've been getting lots of sleep so I think that's helping as well.

I recommend getting the flu vaccine. It is safe and helps build antibodies that help with similar flu-like viruses. Flu vaccines are still available and good way to really make sure you don't end up in the ER like so many other people in the nation. I second the suggestion by Bear5 that diligent hand washing cannot be stressed enough!

I read somewhere a long time ago to simmer rosemary to kill the flu germs in the air. I started simmering it at work if it doesn't work it sure make me and my co-workers fill better.

Whenever we get that 'feeling' in our sinuses or throat we start on Zycam spray. Seems to keep the worst of the symptoms at bay. I've only had 1 cold this year and DH only had 1 minor bout with a chest infection (he smokes too). That Zycam seems to work. We also take Vitamin C. DS had a bout with strep so he had to go to the doctor for that one. Overall though, its been a pretty healthy winter for us.

Be careful using the neti pot. People have died from it, due to bacteria being in the water they used, which went from their sinus to their brain. Make sure the water you use in the neti pot is sterilized.
